Chapter 18 - Valeria's Last Secret

Alejandro returned to the room.

Valeria was staring at the closed door.

He remembered Esther's words.

"Who helped you find Samuel?"

Valeria looked at him.

The hesitation was immediate.

Alejandro felt an old instinct rise.

Suspicion.

Then he forced it down.

He would not repeat the same mistake.

"Tell me when you're ready."

Valeria nodded slowly.

"It was Marcela."

Alejandro stared at her.

"What?"

"Three weeks ago."

"She came into my room after midnight."

"She gave me Samuel's private number."

Alejandro sat down.

"Why?"

"She said she thought Esther was going too far."

"She told me not to tell you because you wouldn't believe either of us."

Alejandro thought back to Marcela's behavior.

The photograph.

The deleted recordings.

The lies.

Nothing made sense.

"Then why frame Samuel as your lover?"

"Because Esther discovered Marcela had helped me."

Valeria's eyes filled with tears.

"Marcela came back the next day terrified."

"She said Esther knew."

"She begged me to deny everything."

"Then she started acting against me again."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Marcela said Esther had threatened her."

"With what?"

"Something about your father's death."

Alejandro understood.

Marcela had been trapped between guilt and fear.

She had tried to help Valeria once.

Then Esther regained control.

It did not erase what Marcela had done.

But it changed the shape of the betrayal.

Later that afternoon, Alejandro confronted Marcela in the hospital where she was recovering from smoke inhalation.

"Why didn't you tell me you gave Samuel's number to Valeria?"

Marcela started crying immediately.

"Because I was ashamed."

"Of helping her?"

"Of what I did afterward."

She covered her face.

"I knew Mother was dangerous."

"I had known for years."

"Not everything."

"But enough."

"Why stay with her?"

Marcela looked at him.

"Because she told me Dad killed himself."

Alejandro frowned.

"That's not what happened."

"I know that now."

"She told me Dad discovered you weren't really her son and couldn't live with the scandal."

Alejandro stared at her.

"That makes no sense."

"I was twenty-one."

"She had spent my entire life teaching me not to question her."

Marcela wiped her eyes.

"Then, when Valeria became sick, I finally saw the pattern."

"So I contacted Samuel."

"But Mother found out."

"She showed me the old notebook."

"She said if I betrayed her, she'd make it look like I had ordered everything through the foundation."

Alejandro remembered Marcela's signature on the pharmaceutical orders.

"She already had."

Marcela nodded.

"That's why I erased the videos."

"That's why I sent the photograph."

"I was trying to prove loyalty."

Alejandro's expression hardened.

"You nearly got Valeria killed."

"I know."

"Your fear doesn't erase that."

"I know."

Marcela did not ask forgiveness.

For the first time, Alejandro respected her enough to notice.

She opened the bedside drawer and removed a flash drive.

"I copied something before the archive fire."

"What?"

"Mother's private accounting ledger."

"Why?"

"I thought I might need protection."

Alejandro took it.

"What is on it?"

"Payments."

"To Velasco."

"To private investigators."

"To the medical charity."

"And one account I don't recognize."

Alejandro examined the label.

L.M. TRUST.

His blood ran cold.

"Lucia Marquez?"

Marcela shook her head.

"I don't know."

Investigators analyzed the account that evening.

The trust contained over twenty-seven million dollars.

It had been established by Eduardo one year before his death.

The beneficiary was not Alejandro.

It was Elena Marquez.

Lucia's sister.

And the trust had never been delivered.

Esther had intercepted it.

The motive for Eduardo's death had not only been control of the company.

He had been preparing to compensate Lucia's family and publicly acknowledge Alejandro's true parentage.

Esther had not merely feared losing money.

She had feared losing the story she had spent decades forcing everyone to believe.
