Chapter 1 - What the Blanket Had Hidden

Alejandro's hand remained frozen around the edge of the blanket.

For several seconds, he could not understand what he was seeing.

Valeria's legs were covered from her thighs to her ankles in deep purple bruises.

Some were fading yellow around the edges.

Others were fresh, almost black.

Thin medical bandages wrapped both knees and one ankle.

Near her left calf, a strip of gauze had been taped over a wound that had clearly been treated recently.

Alejandro stared at her.

The photograph on his phone suddenly felt absurd.

There was no lover hiding in this room.

There was only his terrified pregnant wife.

"What happened to you?"

His voice had lost all its anger.

Valeria pulled the blanket back over herself with trembling hands.

"Please close the door."

Alejandro obeyed without thinking.

When he turned around again, she was crying silently.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

It was the kind of crying that came from someone who had been holding fear inside for too long.

"Who did this?"

Valeria looked toward the hallway.

That small movement frightened him more than the bruises.

"Valeria."

She shook her head.

"If I tell you now, you won't believe me."

"I just saw your legs."

"That doesn't mean you'll believe the rest."

Alejandro stepped closer.

She immediately recoiled.

He stopped.

The reaction felt like a knife entering his chest.

She had never been afraid of him before.

At least, he had never believed she was.

"The man in the photograph."

He swallowed.

"Was he a doctor?"

Valeria looked at him sharply.

"How did you know?"

Alejandro sat on the edge of the chair opposite the bed.

"Because Marcela wanted me to think he was your lover."

The room went completely still.

Valeria's expression changed.

"Marcela gave you the photograph?"

"Yes."

Valeria covered her mouth.

"Oh God."

Alejandro felt cold.

"What?"

"That means she knows."

"Knows what?"

Valeria lowered her voice.

"That I've been seeing Dr. Samuel Ortega."

Alejandro recognized the name.

Ortega was a respected maternal-fetal medicine specialist who treated high-risk pregnancies at a private hospital in Mexico City.

"Why secretly?"

"Because every time I tried to make an appointment through the family office, someone canceled it."

Alejandro frowned.

"Canceled it?"

"The first time they said the doctor had an emergency."

"The second time they told me your mother had already arranged another specialist."

"The third time, the driver took me to the wrong hospital."

Alejandro stared at her.

Valeria continued.

"That's when Samuel started coming here after midnight."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She laughed once, bitterly.

"Because you were in Monterrey."

"You were in Miami."

"You were in Madrid."

"And every time I called, your mother was standing in the room telling me not to disturb you with pregnancy nerves."

Alejandro looked away.

Those words sounded exactly like Esther.

He had heard them many times.

Valeria slowly pulled the blanket aside again.

She pointed at the bruises.

"Samuel says something is wrong with my blood."

Alejandro's heart began pounding.

"What does that mean?"

"My platelets are dangerously low."

"The bruising isn't normal."

"He thinks I've been exposed to something."

"Exposed to what?"

Valeria's eyes filled with fear.

"He doesn't know yet."

She reached beneath her pillow and removed a folded laboratory report.

Alejandro took it.

Several values had been circled in red.

He understood almost none of them.

But he understood the handwritten note at the bottom.

URGENT.

POSSIBLE TOXIC EXPOSURE.

REPEAT TESTS IMMEDIATELY.

Alejandro looked up.

"Why aren't you in a hospital?"

"I tried to go yesterday."

"What stopped you?"

Valeria stared directly into his eyes.

"Your mother."

Before Alejandro could answer, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Then came a knock.

"Alejandro?"

Marcela's voice.

Valeria's entire body stiffened.

Marcela opened the door without waiting.

She stepped inside carrying a breakfast tray and wearing the same gentle smile she used at charity galas.

Then she noticed the medical papers in Alejandro's hands.

The smile disappeared for less than a second.

But Alejandro saw it.

Marcela recovered quickly.

"Is everything all right?"

Alejandro stood.

"Who took the photograph?"

Marcela blinked.

"What?"

"The photograph of the man leaving the house."

"I told you."

"One of the security guards."

"Which one?"

Her smile tightened.

"I don't remember."

Alejandro walked closer.

"You sent me a photograph accusing my pregnant wife of having an affair, but you don't remember who took it?"

Marcela placed the tray on the table.

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

"From humiliation."

Behind him, Valeria whispered.

"Ask her about the tea."

Marcela froze.

Alejandro turned.

"What tea?"

Valeria pointed toward the tray.

A porcelain cup sat beside the toast.

Steam curled gently from its surface.

The same herbal mixture Esther insisted Valeria drink every morning.

Valeria's voice shook.

"Samuel told me to stop drinking it."

Alejandro looked at Marcela.

May you like

Marcela looked at the cup.

And for the first time in his life, Alejandro saw genuine fear in his sister's face.
