Chapter 15 - The Lie That Existed Before the Marriage

The hotel receipt looked convincing.

Dates.

Room number.

Payment record.

Signatures.

Even a copy of an identification card.

There was only one problem.

Three years before Alejandro and Valeria married, Valeria had never used the surname Mendoza.

Her legal surname had been Salazar.

“Mendoza was my mother’s maiden name,” she said.

Gabriel looked up.

“Did you ever use it legally?”

“No.”

“Socially?”

“Never.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Then whoever created this didn’t know you as well as they thought.”

Valeria shook her head.

“No.”

“They knew exactly enough.”

“What do you mean?”

“My mother died when I was seventeen.”

She looked at the document.

“I used Mendoza once.”

“When?”

“On a scholarship application.”

Alejandro stared.

“How would Esther know that?”

Valeria looked at him.

“Your family office conducted a background investigation before we married.”

He felt another wave of shame.

Of course they had.

Esther had insisted.

She had called it standard due diligence.

Alejandro had allowed it.

Every private detail collected in the name of protecting him had later become a weapon against Valeria.

Gabriel sent the receipt to a forensic accounting team.

By evening, they found the flaw.

The hotel’s reservation system did not use that invoice format until two years after the supposed stay.

Forgery.

Another manufactured reality.

Then they examined the copied identification.

The photograph was Valeria.

The number belonged to somebody else.

The signature was digitally reproduced from her prenuptial agreement.

Gabriel looked at Alejandro.

“Who had access to that agreement?”

Alejandro almost laughed.

“Esther.”

By then, the pattern was not merely evidence.

It was a signature.

Every lie came from a real fragment.

A photograph.

A signature.

A medical name.

A true trip.

A real person.

Esther did not invent fantasies.

She rearranged reality.

That made her lies harder to expose.

And far more dangerous.

Two days later, Valeria was discharged from the hospital.

She refused to return to the Aranda mansion.

Alejandro did not ask her to.

They moved into a rented house near the hospital.

Small by Aranda standards.

Four bedrooms.

A garden.

No staff except Camila, who Valeria personally asked to stay with them for a few weeks.

The first night, Alejandro made dinner.

It was terrible.

Valeria took one bite.

“What is this?”

“Chicken.”

She looked at the plate.

“Are you sure?”

He laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

For ten minutes, life felt almost normal.

Then the doorbell rang.

Alejandro checked the security camera before opening.

Rafael stood outside.

Alone.

He held no documents.

No leather case.

No excuses.

Alejandro opened the door but did not invite him in.

“What do you want?”

“To apologize.”

“You already did.”

“No.”

Rafael looked at Valeria behind him.

“I said the words.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

Alejandro remained silent.

Rafael continued.

“I resigned from the board today.”

Alejandro’s expression changed.

“What?”

“I resigned from every position.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent years telling myself that being passive made me innocent.”

Rafael swallowed.

“It didn’t.”

Valeria walked closer.

Rafael looked at her.

“I knew Esther was manipulating your care.”

“I convinced myself she only wanted to frighten you into leaving.”

“When the bruises appeared, I told myself Teresa knew what she was doing.”

“When you fell, I told myself it had been an accident.”

“When Esther prepared the psychiatric report, I knew it was false.”

His voice cracked.

“And I stayed.”

Valeria listened without interrupting.

Rafael continued.

“I was more afraid of confronting my wife than I was afraid for yours.”

Alejandro looked away.

The sentence was ugly.

But true.

Rafael took a breath.

“I have given Detective Cruz access to every account I know about.”

“Good.”

“I also gave her something else.”

“What?”

“My phone records.”

Alejandro frowned.

“Why?”

“Because after the staircase incident, Esther called someone.”

“Who?”

“I didn’t recognize the number.”

“And?”

“Police identified it.”

Rafael’s expression darkened.

“It belonged to the man who started Gabriel’s office fire.”

Alejandro went still.

Valeria’s face paled.

Rafael continued.

“They arrested him this morning.”

“Who is he?”

“A former Aranda security contractor.”

Alejandro looked toward the living room where their unborn child’s ultrasound image sat on the table.

Everything connected back to his family.

Money.

Fear.

Silence.

But now the circle was closing.

Rafael looked at his son.

“There is one more thing you need to know.”

Alejandro exhaled.

“There is always one more thing.”

“This one is about your childhood.”

Alejandro frowned.

Rafael looked ashamed.

“Your Uncle Javier never abandoned you.”

Alejandro froze.

May you like

“What?”

“Esther made sure you believed he did.”
