Chapter 11 - The Safe Beneath the Floor

Police obtained a warrant before midnight.
Esther’s attorneys fought it.
They argued.
Delayed.
Threatened.
Objected.
But the combination of Teresa’s statement, the laboratory results, the forged psychiatric report, and Camila’s eyewitness account was enough.
Alejandro did not return to the mansion for the search.
He stayed at the hospital with Valeria.
He had finally learned one lesson.
The company could wait.
The house could wait.
Evidence could wait.
His wife could not.
Detective Cruz called shortly after two in the morning.
“We found the safe.”
Alejandro stood beside the hospital window.
“What was inside?”
“Documents.”
“What kind?”
“Medical.”
His stomach tightened.
“Valeria’s?”
“Yes.”
“Anything else?”
“Financial transfers to Teresa.”
Alejandro closed his eyes.
“How much?”
“Over a hundred thousand dollars across several months.”
“That proves payment.”
“It proves payment.”
Cruz remained careful.
“Intent will still matter.”
“What else?”
“A copy of the forged psychiatric evaluation.”
Valeria was awake now.
She watched him from the bed.
Alejandro put the call on speaker.
Detective Cruz continued.
“There were also photographs.”
Valeria frowned.
“Of what?”
Cruz hesitated.
“You.”
Valeria sat straighter.
“What kind of photographs?”
“You leaving appointments.”
“Walking with Dr. Rivas.”
“Speaking with Camila.”
“Using a public phone outside a pharmacy.”
Valeria stared at Alejandro.
“She was watching me.”
“Yes.”
Cruz continued.
“And there’s a notebook.”
Alejandro’s skin went cold.
“What notebook?”
“Mrs. Aranda’s handwriting appears throughout it.”
“What does it say?”
“We’re still reviewing it.”
“Give me one example.”
Cruz paused.
Then read.
“Week twenty-seven.”
She stopped.
Valeria’s hand moved to her stomach.
Cruz continued.
“V remains resistant.”
Another pause.
“R is becoming nervous.”
Alejandro understood the initials.
Valeria.
Rafael.
Detective Cruz read another line.
“A remains blind.”
Alejandro closed his eyes.
A.
Alejandro.
His mother had reduced them all to initials in a notebook.
A plan.
A problem.
A timeline.
Valeria whispered, “What else?”
Cruz’s voice softened.
“One entry says, ‘If she leaves voluntarily, no further measures required.’”
Alejandro’s jaw tightened.
“And if she didn’t leave?”
“We found another entry two weeks later.”
Cruz took a breath.
“‘She refuses to leave.’”
Silence.
“Then?”
“Nothing for three days.”
Valeria looked frightened.
“What happened three days later?”
Cruz checked.
“The staircase incident.”
Alejandro turned away from the phone.
He pressed one hand against the window.
Below, cars moved through the city.
People lived ordinary lives.
Somewhere, a couple argued about groceries.
Someone celebrated a birthday.
Someone drove home after work.
And Alejandro was learning that his mother had apparently documented a campaign against his pregnant wife like a business project.
Detective Cruz continued.
“There is another item.”
“What?”
“A photograph of the original will.”
“Why is that important?”
“Because several passages are highlighted.”
Alejandro knew before she said it.
“The child clause.”
“Yes.”
“And the transfer of voting control.”
“Yes.”
Valeria leaned back against the pillow.
“This was always about power.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“Maybe at first.”
“What do you mean?”
He thought of the forged report.
The altered photograph.
The surveillance.
The humiliation.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“It became more than that.”
“It became about destroying you.”
Valeria’s eyes filled.
Alejandro continued.
“If she only wanted the shares, she could have challenged the trust.”
“She wanted everyone to believe I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
“And unfaithful.”
“Yes.”
“And if I lost the baby…”
She could not finish.
Alejandro sat beside her.
“She would have said your instability caused it.”
Valeria closed her eyes.
The cruelty of the plan settled over both of them.
Esther had prepared a narrative.
Valeria was emotionally unstable.
Valeria was secretly seeing another man.
Valeria was difficult.
Valeria was careless.
If something happened to the pregnancy, the family would pity Alejandro.
Then Esther would remain in control.
Everything had been arranged.
Except Valeria had survived.
Mateo had believed her.
Camila had seen too much.
Teresa had developed a conscience.
Rafael had finally broken his silence.
And Alejandro had found the bandages.
The door opened.
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Aranda?”
Valeria looked up.
“We need to check something.”
“What?”
The nurse smiled gently.
“Your baby is making us a little nervous.”
Alejandro’s heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“The heartbeat pattern changed.”
Valeria gripped his hand.
The nurse continued.
“We’re bringing the obstetrician in now.”
Within minutes, the quiet room became crowded.
Monitors changed.
Instructions became quicker.
Valeria’s fear rose.
“Alejandro.”
“I’m here.”
“Don’t leave.”
“I won’t.”
The obstetrician studied the monitor.
Then she looked at them.
“We may need to deliver early.”
Valeria’s eyes widened.
“It’s too soon.”
“We will do everything possible to avoid that.”
The doctor’s voice remained calm.
“But I need you both prepared.”
Alejandro held Valeria’s hand.
For the first time since this nightmare began, the Aranda empire did not matter at all.
May you like
There was only one tiny heartbeat on the monitor.
And suddenly, it slowed.
