Chapter 13 - What Rafael Heard and Chose to Ignore

Police reached the vineyard before Esther did.

Her missing vehicle was found abandoned eleven miles away.

For several hours, nobody knew where she had gone.

But the vineyard office gave investigators something even more important.

The recordings.

Don Emilio’s old system still functioned.

The files were stored automatically on a hidden local server.

Most contained old business meetings.

Some were corrupted.

One file had been recorded six months earlier.

Three voices were clearly audible.

Esther.

Rafael.

Teresa.

Detective Cruz played the recording for Alejandro and Valeria at the hospital.

Rafael’s voice came first.

“This is unnecessary.”

Esther answered.

“Then leave.”

“No.”

“Then stop complaining.”

Teresa asked, “Why am I here?”

Esther answered calmly.

“Because my daughter-in-law requires private medical supervision.”

“What kind?”

“The discreet kind.”

Rafael interrupted.

“Esther.”

She ignored him.

“Valeria has become emotional.”

Teresa said, “Pregnancy does that.”

“She is threatening to take Alejandro away from this family.”

Rafael said, “That’s not true.”

“Did I ask you?”

Silence.

Then Esther continued.

“The objective is simple.”

Alejandro’s grip tightened around Valeria’s hand.

“We encourage Valeria to reconsider her place here.”

Teresa asked, “How?”

“Fatigue.”

“Discomfort.”

“Anxiety.”

“Nothing dramatic.”

Rafael’s recorded voice said, “This has gone too far.”

Esther laughed.

“It hasn’t even started.”

Valeria closed her eyes.

Detective Cruz paused the recording.

“You don’t have to continue.”

“Yes, we do,” Valeria said.

Alejandro looked at her.

She nodded.

Cruz pressed play.

Teresa’s voice sounded nervous.

“You want me to make her sick?”

“I want you to make her believe this pregnancy is destroying her.”

Rafael said, “No.”

Esther answered, “You lost the right to object years ago.”

There was a pause.

Teresa asked, “What happens if she refuses to leave?”

Esther did not answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was quiet.

“Then we reconsider.”

The recording continued for several minutes.

No explicit instruction to kill.

No dramatic order.

Esther was too careful for that.

But the intent was unmistakable.

Manipulate Valeria’s health.

Create fear.

Break the marriage.

Make her leave before the baby was born.

Then another part began.

Rafael said, “If Alejandro finds out…”

“He won’t.”

“He loves her.”

“He loves me too.”

Esther sounded almost amused.

“And I raised him better than she knows him.”

Alejandro flinched.

“She’ll tell him.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’ll make sure that when she finally speaks, he already doubts her.”

Valeria opened her eyes.

The altered photograph.

The forged report.

The entire strategy had been predicted months earlier.

Esther continued.

“A man who believes his wife is betraying him rarely listens carefully to her explanations.”

Alejandro shut his eyes.

The words tore through him.

His mother had known him perfectly.

Known his pride.

Known his jealousy.

Known exactly where to push.

And he had behaved exactly as she expected.

Detective Cruz stopped the recording.

Alejandro stood.

“I need air.”

He walked into the hallway.

Valeria followed slowly despite being told to rest.

He turned.

“You shouldn’t be up.”

“Neither should you be alone.”

He almost laughed.

Then his face collapsed.

“She knew.”

Valeria said nothing.

“She knew exactly what I would do.”

He pressed his hands against his eyes.

“She knew I would believe the photograph.”

“You did.”

“I accused you.”

“Yes.”

“I made her plan work.”

“For three days.”

“That’s enough.”

Valeria looked at him.

“It almost was.”

He lowered his hands.

“I don’t know how you can even look at me.”

“Because I’m deciding who you are now.”

The words silenced him.

“Not who you were three days ago.”

Alejandro swallowed.

Valeria continued.

“But forgiveness does not erase responsibility.”

“I know.”

“If we stay together, things change.”

“They will.”

“No.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Don’t give me a promise because you’re scared.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“Tell me what changes.”

He thought carefully.

“No more family decisions without you.”

She waited.

“No more allowing my mother into our home without permission.”

Another pause.

“No more assuming blood means loyalty.”

Valeria’s expression softened slightly.

“And?”

Alejandro took a breath.

“If you tell me something is wrong, I listen before I defend anyone.”

Valeria nodded.

“That’s a start.”

His phone rang.

Detective Cruz appeared in the doorway at the same time.

She looked serious.

“We found your mother.”

Alejandro straightened.

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

Valeria’s eyes widened.

“She tried to leave?”

“Yes.”

“Where was she going?”

“Madrid.”

Alejandro stared.

Cruz continued.

“She had two passports.”

“One is hers.”

“And the other?”

May you like

Detective Cruz held his gaze.

“It belongs to Teresa Mendoza.”
