Chapter 18 - WHY HIS NAME WAS LEFT BLANK

Luca did not ask me about the birth certificate immediately.

That somehow made it worse.

We sat across from each other at the kitchen table.

The document lay between us.

Father: Not listed.

I had filled out that form six years earlier.

Alone.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

“What do you want to ask me?”

Luca looked at the paper.

“Why?”

I swallowed.

“The email.”

“You believed I did not want them.”

“Yes.”

“But you knew they were mine.”

“Yes.”

“Why not put my name down anyway?”

“Because I was afraid.”

His jaw tightened.

“Of me?”

“Of Moretti.”

He frowned.

“The family.”

I looked at him.

“Your mother already hated me.”

He could not argue.

“Your lawyers had treated our divorce like a hostile takeover.”

He said nothing.

“Then I received an email telling me not to contact you.”

I touched the paper.

“I was terrified that if your name appeared here, people with more money and more power than I could imagine would come for my babies.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I would never have taken them from you.”

“I know that now.”

“But then?”

“Then I did not know anything.”

I felt tears rise.

“I had just delivered two premature babies.”

“You never told me they were premature.”

“Eli spent eight days in neonatal care.”

Luca’s face collapsed.

“Emma spent eleven.”

He stood and turned away.

I continued because the truth had waited long enough.

“I slept in a chair beside them.”

“Nia.”

“No.”

I wiped my face.

“You need to hear this.”

He faced me again.

“Every time the hospital phone rang, I thought someone from your family had found us.”

“I would have come.”

“But I believed you had rejected them.”

“I know.”

“I signed that form because I thought I was protecting them.”

Luca sat down again.

“Did you ever plan to tell them about me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When they were old enough to understand.”

“That could have been years.”

“Yes.”

He looked hurt.

I did not soften it.

“I made a choice too.”

The truth sat between us.

Evelyn had stolen the letter.

But after that, I had chosen not to fight my way back into Luca’s life.

Fear had made the decision for me.

Just as fear had once made decisions for him.

“I’m sorry.”

Luca looked up.

It was the first time I had said those words to him.

“I am sorry you missed them.”

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry I let one cruel message convince me there was nothing left to say.”

He reached across the table.

I let him take my hand.

“I’m sorry I made you believe that message was possible.”

We stayed like that for a long time.

Two people finally apologizing for different parts of the same disaster.

The legal issue disappeared quickly.

Leaving Luca’s name off the certificate had not been illegal.

The DNA test established paternity.

New birth certificates could be issued if both parents agreed.

Luca did not pressure me.

He simply asked.

“Do you want to change them?”

I thought about Eli.

Emma.

The father who now showed up.

“Yes.”

A week later, Luca Moretti’s name was officially added to both birth records.

When he received the copies, he stared at them for nearly a minute.

Then he whispered.

“I existed in their story.”

I squeezed his hand.

“You always did.”

May you like

He looked at me.

“We just lost some pages.”
