Chapter 16 - THE FALL OF EVELYN SHAW

The prosecutor’s case against Evelyn grew quickly after Helen decided to cooperate.
Money transfers led to shell companies.
Shell companies led to Graham.
Graham led to archived emails.
The emails led to private investigators Evelyn had hired during my marriage.
She had tracked my appointments.
My family.
Even my friendships.
She had known more about me than I knew about her.
Then investigators found the one document Evelyn could not explain away.
A draft of the rejection email.
Saved on her personal laptop.
Created one day before my letter reached Luca’s office.
She had expected me to contact him.
She had prepared the rejection in advance.
The evidence became public during a pretrial hearing.
For the first time, the narrative changed.
I was no longer the woman who hid billionaire heirs.
I was the woman whose pregnancy announcement had been deliberately intercepted.
Evelyn’s carefully built reputation collapsed within days.
She resigned from two charitable boards.
Her law license came under review.
Business partners distanced themselves.
Television commentators who had defended her stopped returning calls.
None of it gave me back six years.
None of it gave Luca back first steps.
Evelyn requested one meeting with me.
My attorney said I did not have to go.
I went anyway.
We met in a conference room with lawyers present.
Evelyn entered wearing gray.
No cameras.
No makeup team.
No polished public smile.
She sat across from me.
“I assume you wanted to see me ruined.”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I wanted the truth.”
“You have it.”
“Most of it.”
She folded her hands.
“What do you want to know?”
“Why me?”
Her expression almost softened.
“It was never really you.”
“That’s convenient.”
“I wanted Luca.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“I wanted what he represented.”
That answer was colder than love.
“He was going to become one of the most powerful men in the country.”
“And you wanted to stand beside him.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love him?”
“In my way.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only one I have.”
I studied her.
“You knew I was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
The word finally came.
No lawyers interrupted.
No denials.
“You knew there were twins.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever see photographs of them?”
“Not until the restaurant.”
I believed her.
“Did you ever regret it?”
She looked at the table.
“Sometimes.”
“That’s all?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“I don’t know.”
My voice shook.
“That you heard two babies existed and understood they were human beings.”
“I understood.”
“No.”
I stood.
“You understood them as obstacles.”
Evelyn finally looked up.
“You think Luca would have become the man he became if you stayed?”
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
She frowned.
“You never understood him.”
“No.”
I picked up my purse.
“You never understood us.”
At the door, Evelyn called my name.
I turned.
“He loved you the entire time.”
My breath caught.
She looked almost angry admitting it.
“Even when he married me.”
I said nothing.
“He compared everything to you.”
Her eyes filled with tears for the first time.
“I won everything.”
She laughed bitterly.
“And somehow I still lived in your shadow.”
I opened the door.
“That wasn’t my fault.”
May you like
“I know.”
For once, Evelyn Shaw had nothing left to say.
