Chapter 12 - LUCA’S CONFESSION

I told Luca about Evelyn’s call.
He listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he walked to the window.
For a long time, he said nothing.
“You went to my apartment.”
“Yes.”
“Three weeks after the divorce.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I wanted you back.”
I stared at him.
“You never told me.”
“I thought you had someone else.”
“Because Evelyn told you that?”
“She showed me a photograph.”
“What photograph?”
“You leaving a restaurant with a man.”
I almost laughed.
“My brother?”
Luca turned.
“What?”
“My half brother Marcus visited me after the divorce.”
His face went blank.
“You told me he lived in California.”
“He does.”
“I never met him.”
“No.”
Luca sat down slowly.
The ridiculousness of it would have been funny if it had not cost us years.
“She told me you were seeing someone.”
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ask me?”
“No.”
“Of course not.”
He flinched.
I wanted to punish him with every word.
Part of me still could.
Then I saw something I had never seen in Luca when we were married.
Complete humiliation.
Not public embarrassment.
Not wounded pride.
He was looking directly at the ugliest part of himself.
“I was afraid.”
I crossed my arms.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
“That you would confirm you were happier without me.”
His honesty silenced me.
“You had left me.”
“I know.”
“You asked for the divorce.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to become the abandoned one afterward.”
“I know.”
He looked at me.
“That is why I did not go upstairs.”
Something inside me broke open.
For years, I had imagined that Luca moved from our marriage to his empire without looking back.
Instead, he had apparently sat in a car outside my building.
Close enough to reach me.
Too proud to knock.
“I was upstairs.”
His eyes closed.
“I know that now.”
“I was sick every morning.”
He swallowed.
“I know.”
“I was pregnant with your children.”
His face twisted.
“I know.”
“You were downstairs.”
“Yes.”
We sat in the silence of seven missing years.
Then Luca pulled an envelope from his coat.
“What is that?”
“My resignation.”
I stared at him.
“From Moretti Global?”
“Temporary leave.”
“Why?”
“The board thinks the scandal is damaging the company.”
“They asked you to step down?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because every hour I spend fighting for a stock price is an hour I am not fixing what matters.”
I almost became angry.
“You cannot abandon your life because of guilt.”
“This is not guilt.”
“What is it?”
“Priority.”
He leaned forward.
“I spent years using work to escape everything I could not control.”
He looked toward the room where Eli and Emma were playing.
“I am not doing that again.”
That night, Luca cooked dinner.
Technically, Luca attempted to cook dinner.
He burned the chicken.
Emma laughed until she cried.
Eli insisted pizza was safer.
For thirty minutes, I forgot there were reporters outside.
I forgot Evelyn existed.
Then the doorbell rang.
Luca’s security chief entered holding a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a small digital recorder recovered from Helen Mercer’s storage unit.
The date written on the back was seven years old.
Luca pressed play.
May you like
Evelyn’s younger voice filled the room.
“If Nia gets pregnant, Luca can never know.”
