Chapter 7 - The Man Vanessa Forgot

Caleb Ross did not look like someone connected to $2.4 million.

He wore faded jeans, a dark jacket, and the exhausted expression of a man who had not slept.

Mason met with him first.

An hour later, Caleb entered the conference room where Dad and I waited.

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I had become tired of apologies.

“For what?”

“For not coming sooner.”

He sat down.

“I thought Vanessa was just chasing money.”

“What changed?”

Caleb placed his phone on the table.

“Last night she called me.”

My eyes narrowed.

“From the second phone?”

“I think so.”

“What did she say?”

“She wanted me to destroy documents.”

Mason leaned forward.

“Which documents?”

“Vesper invoices.”

He swallowed.

“And messages between us.”

Caleb explained that he and Vanessa had been engaged five years earlier.

Their relationship ended when she began working around wealthy investors and decided Caleb no longer fit the future she wanted.

But she did not cut him out completely.

Instead, she used him.

Vesper Advisory had been created in Caleb’s name after Vanessa told him she needed a company for a legitimate consulting opportunity.

“She said I’d get ten percent.”

“Did you?”

I asked.

“About seventy thousand dollars.”

“What happened to the rest?”

“She controlled the accounts.”

Mason made a note.

“Did Adrian know?”

Caleb looked at me.

“Yes.”

The word landed heavily.

I had expected Vanessa to be stealing behind Adrian’s back.

I had not expected Adrian to be part of it.

“What exactly did Adrian know?”

“He knew Vesper was tied to Vanessa.”

Caleb rubbed his hands together.

“He approved the payments.”

“Why?”

“Vanessa told me it was their emergency fund.”

My father’s expression sharpened.

“Emergency from what?”

“From you.”

Caleb looked at me.

I almost laughed.

“Adrian didn’t know who I was.”

“No.”

Caleb shook his head.

“But Vanessa knew you had independent assets.”

“How?”

“She hired someone to investigate you.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“When?”

“Last year.”

I remembered the exact period.

Adrian had suddenly become fascinated by estate planning.

He asked strange questions about my mother.

About old accounts.

About whether I expected an inheritance.

I thought he was preparing for our future.

He had been measuring what I was worth.

Caleb unlocked his phone.

“I have messages.”

Vanessa had been careless with him because she believed he remained emotionally attached to her.

He probably did.

That was why she trusted him.

The messages showed months of planning.

At first, Vanessa only wanted Adrian to divorce me.

Then she discovered that certain assets were beyond his reach.

After that, the plan changed.

She encouraged him to obtain my signature on property transfers before filing for divorce.

If I refused, they intended to pressure me.

One message made my hands shake.

SHE ALWAYS GIVES IN WHEN HE GETS ANGRY.

Another appeared beneath it.

THIS TIME HE NEEDS TO MAKE SURE SHE SIGNS.

I stared at the words.

Caleb looked ashamed.

“I should have understood.”

Dad stood abruptly.

Mason raised one hand.

“Julian.”

My father looked ready to tear the table apart.

I understood the feeling.

But I did not want rage deciding what happened next.

I had seen where rage led.

“Sit down, Dad.”

He looked at me.

Then slowly sat.

Caleb continued.

“There’s more.”

He opened another thread.

The messages were dated four months earlier.

Vanessa had written about Adrian’s company.

About debt.

About the house.

About my trust.

And about something called Project Crown.

“What is Project Crown?”

I asked.

Caleb looked at Mason.

“I don't know exactly.”

Then he looked at me.

“But Vanessa said once it was complete, Adrian wouldn’t just divorce you.”

May you like

He hesitated.

“He would own everything connected to your name.”
