Chapter 12 - Harold Vale's Warning

I stared at Adrian.

“You knew?”

“Not who your father was.”

He shook his head.

“My grandfather died before we married.”

“Then what did he warn you about?”

Adrian looked down at his hands.

“He knew Bellamy Strategic Partners was connected to you.”

That made sense.

Harold Vale had built the original company.

He would have known who entered the shareholder registry.

“He told me your family had influence.”

“How much?”

“He never said.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“I thought he meant twenty million.”

I said nothing.

“He told me not to marry you if I cared more about proving myself than loving you.”

The room became very quiet.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

“What did you say?”

“I told him he was old.”

Adrian’s mouth twisted.

“I told him he did not understand me.”

“And did he?”

“Yes.”

The answer came quickly.

Adrian looked at me.

“He understood me perfectly.”

For the first time, there was no defense in his voice.

No Vanessa.

No anger.

No excuse.

“I spent my entire life believing everything could be measured by ownership.”

“Companies.”

“Properties.”

“Influence.”

“People.”

He swallowed.

“When I met you, you were the first person who did not seem impressed.”

“I liked that.”

“Then I started resenting it.”

I remembered the dinners.

The subtle questions.

The way Adrian grew irritated when I refused expensive gifts.

The way he wanted me photographed beside him but never speaking too much.

I had thought he wanted privacy.

Perhaps he wanted hierarchy.

“You needed me smaller.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Adrian continued.

“Vanessa understood that.”

“She kept telling me you looked down on me.”

“I never did.”

“I know that now.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“You knew it then too.”

His eyes met mine.

“You simply liked the version where I was guilty.”

He looked away.

After several seconds, I asked, “Did you know about the forged signature?”

“Yes.”

The word ended something inside me.

Even after the recording, hearing it directly mattered.

“Did you plan what happened that night?”

“No.”

“Be careful.”

“I knew Vanessa wanted the signature.”

“I knew the divorce documents were ready.”

“I knew she had inserted the assignment.”

He closed his eyes.

“But I did not plan to hurt you.”

I stared at him.

“Yet you did.”

“Yes.”

“Twenty times.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Why did you stop?”

He looked at me.

I realized he had never considered the question.

Finally he whispered, “Because Vanessa told me twenty was enough.”

My stomach turned.

That was worse than anything else he could have said.

He had not stopped because he saw my pain.

He had stopped because someone else declared the punishment complete.

I stood.

The meeting was over.

“Mara.”

I looked back.

Adrian’s eyes were wet.

“Is there any version of the future where you forgive me?”

I thought carefully.

“Maybe.”

Hope flickered across his face.

Then I continued.

“Forgiveness is something I may choose for myself someday.”

“It is not something you will receive as a reward.”

His hope disappeared.

“And forgiveness will never mean I come back.”

I opened the door.

Before leaving, Adrian spoke again.

“There’s one thing Vanessa never told you.”

I stopped.

“She met your father before our wedding.”

My hand froze on the door.

I turned around.

Adrian looked exhausted.

“She met Julian Cross three years before you ever introduced her to me.”

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“I found the photograph last night.”

“What photograph?”

“A Cross Meridian charity event.”

May you like

He leaned back.

“Vanessa is standing directly beside your father.”
