Chapter 16 - The Child Vanessa Used as a Crown

Vanessa returned to the city under legal pressure.
Her attorneys advised her to cooperate with investigators regarding the financial transactions.
For almost three weeks, I heard nothing about her pregnancy.
I preferred it that way.
Then Adrian’s attorney requested a delay in one hearing.
The reason became public in the filing.
Vanessa had confirmed she was pregnant.
Adrian immediately began telling friends the child was his.
He framed everything differently after that.
He was no longer the fallen CEO accused of financial misconduct and violence.
He was an expectant father fighting for his future.
Once again, he wanted a new story.
But Vanessa had stopped cooperating with him.
Through her attorney, she refused to confirm paternity.
Adrian was furious.
Caleb said nothing.
Neither did I.
The child had not caused any of this.
Whatever happened between the adults, I refused to make an unborn baby part of my revenge.
Vanessa finally requested a meeting with me.
My first response was no.
Then Mason told me why.
“She wants to provide evidence against Adrian in exchange for your agreement not to pursue certain civil claims against her personally.”
“What evidence?”
“She won't say until you meet.”
Dad hated the idea.
I agreed anyway.
We met in a conference room with attorneys present.
Vanessa looked different.
No champagne silk.
No diamond earrings.
No polished smile.
She wore a plain gray dress.
For the first time, she looked tired.
“You won.”
Those were her first words.
“This wasn't a competition.”
“It always was to me.”
“I know.”
She looked down.
“I hated you before I knew you.”
I waited.
“You walked into that Cross Meridian dinner wearing a simple blue dress.”
“Everyone moved around you.”
“Nobody announced who you were.”
“Nobody had to.”
Her eyes hardened.
“I spent my whole life trying to enter rooms like that.”
“You were born inside them.”
I shook my head.
“You know nothing about my life.”
“I knew enough.”
“No.”
I leaned forward.
“You knew enough to envy an image.”
She said nothing.
After several seconds, she pushed a flash drive across the table.
“What is this?”
“Adrian’s private archive.”
My attorney did not touch it.
Vanessa continued.
“He recorded negotiations.”
“Board members.”
“Investors.”
“Sometimes your conversations.”
My blood ran cold.
“My conversations?”
“He started recording you after he became suspicious about Bellamy Strategic Partners.”
“How?”
“His home office.”
I remembered sitting there dozens of times.
Talking to Dad.
Mason.
Friends.
Sometimes discussing trust matters.
Vanessa watched my expression.
“He wanted leverage.”
“Against me?”
“Against everyone.”
She almost smiled.
“You married a man more like me than either of you wanted to admit.”
“No.”
I looked directly at her.
“You collected secrets because you believed information made you powerful.”
“Adrian collected people because he believed possession made him powerful.”
“I spent years hiding power because I wanted to know whether someone could love me without it.”
I paused.
“We are not the same.”
Her smile vanished.
She looked toward her attorney.
Then back at me.
“There’s one recording you should hear.”
“What?”
“The night before your wedding.”
My heart stopped.
“What happened the night before my wedding?”
Vanessa looked almost frightened.
“Your father met Adrian.”
I turned toward Mason.
He looked equally confused.
May you like
Vanessa whispered the rest.
“And whatever Julian Cross told him that night is the reason Adrian married you.”
