Chapter 7 - MIRIAM'S LAST MESSAGE

Forensic technicians recovered data from Miriam’s phone before midnight.
Most files had been deleted.
One survived.
A video.
Miriam appeared on screen inside a parked car.
Her eyes were red.
She kept looking behind her.
“If Nathan Vale ever sees this, I failed.”
Nathan watched from the hospital conference room.
Oliver sat beside him.
Miriam continued.
“I found Oliver alive three days after the lake.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Three days.
His son had been alive while search teams dragged the water.
“I heard crying behind the library.”
“I thought it was an animal.”
“Then I found the service panel.”
The video shook.
Miriam had been terrified even while recording.
“Vanessa caught me before I could get him out.”
“She said Nathan ordered it.”
“I knew that was a lie.”
“I have worked for Mr. Vale twelve years.”
“He would tear the house apart with his hands before he left that child in a wall.”
Oliver reached for Nathan’s hand.
Nathan held it.
Miriam continued.
“She threatened my daughter.”
“She knows where Rebecca lives.”
“She knows my grandchildren’s school.”
“So I pretended to believe her.”
“I started bringing Oliver food.”
“I gave him a recorder.”
“I told him evidence was safer than accusations.”
Detective Brooks paused the video.
Nathan wiped his eyes.
“Keep going.”
Miriam returned.
“There is more.”
“Vanessa knew Claire.”
“She worked under another name for a private medical consultancy connected to Claire’s oncology group.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
“She had access to schedules.”
“Files.”
“Medication delivery records.”
“I do not know if she caused Claire’s illness.”
“But she studied the family before Claire died.”
Nathan stood abruptly.
Brooks stopped him.
“Sit down.”
He ignored her.
The video continued.
“I found payments from Conrad Shaw beginning six years ago.”
“Gavin Cole joined later.”
“Dr. Pierce joined after Vanessa married Nathan.”
“They call it Project Heir.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
Miriam looked directly into the camera.
“If something happens to me, check the old pump station beyond the north woods.”
“That is where Gavin takes anything he wants to disappear.”
The video ended.
Oliver whispered, “She saved me.”
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.”
He looked at Brooks.
“We go now.”
“Nathan, you are not law enforcement.”
“I don’t care.”
“You have a traumatized child upstairs.”
That stopped him.
Brooks lowered her voice.
“Stay with your son.”
“Let us find Miriam.”
Nathan hated the words.
But he knew she was right.
Police searched the pump station before dawn.
Nathan waited beside Oliver’s hospital bed.
At 4:38 a.m., Brooks called.
They had found evidence of someone being held there.
Rope.
Blood.
A torn piece of Miriam’s uniform.
But no body.
And no Miriam.
Nathan looked toward Oliver.
The boy was sleeping.
Brooks continued.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“We found recent tire tracks.”
“How recent?”
“Maybe a few days.”
Nathan stood.
“You think she’s alive?”
“I think we cannot rule it out.”
Hope entered the room carefully.
Then Brooks added the bad news.
Vanessa was gone.
Nathan went silent.
“What?”
“She disappeared during the confusion at the estate.”
“You had officers there.”
“She never left through the gates.”
Nathan understood before Brooks explained.
The passages.
Vanessa knew tunnels no one else knew.
She had escaped from inside the property.
Brooks said, “We found a hatch beyond the greenhouse.”
Nathan looked out the hospital window.
“Where does it lead?”
“To the service road.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“She planned an exit.”
“She planned everything.”
Nathan looked down at Oliver.
“No.”
Brooks waited.
Nathan’s voice became quiet.
“She planned almost everything.”
“What did she miss?”
May you like
Nathan looked at the black recorder beside Oliver’s pillow.
“My son surviving.”
