Chapter 18 - WHAT HAPPENED AT THE LAKE

Vanessa agreed to another interview.

No deal.

No reduced sentence.

She claimed she simply wanted the truth documented.

Nathan watched from behind the glass.

Brooks placed Vanessa’s letter on the table.

“What didn’t Conrad tell Oliver?”

Vanessa stared at her hands.

“The kidnapping wasn’t supposed to happen that night.”

Brooks waited.

“We planned it for the following weekend.”

“Why change?”

“We didn’t.”

Vanessa looked up.

“Oliver disappeared before Gavin arrived.”

Nathan’s heart began pounding.

Brooks frowned.

“Explain.”

Vanessa said she had prepared the blood and jacket.

Gavin was supposed to collect Oliver from a trail near the lake.

But when Vanessa went to bring him outside, his room was empty.

She assumed he had wandered toward the dock.

Then she heard voices.

Conrad and Oliver.

Brooks leaned forward.

“Conrad was there?”

“Yes.”

“He told everyone he was in Chicago.”

“He lied.”

“What did Oliver hear?”

“I never knew.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Conrad came back alone.”

“He said the timeline had changed.”

“He told me to put the jacket near the dock.”

“Where was Oliver?”

“Already gone.”

Nathan pressed both hands against the glass.

Conrad had personally taken his son.

Vanessa continued.

“I asked what happened.”

“He said Oliver became curious.”

“About what?”

“A phone call.”

Detective Brooks obtained visitor logs from the lake property.

A maintenance camera had captured Conrad’s car entering through a secondary gate.

The original investigators never checked because the camera belonged to a neighboring utility site.

The footage still existed in archived storage.

There it was.

Conrad’s car.

8:41 p.m.

Then another image.

9:03 p.m.

Oliver walking near the boathouse.

Conrad behind him.

Nathan watched the grainy footage repeatedly.

The lie of the lake had always centered on Vanessa.

But Conrad had been the person who physically took Oliver.

That mattered to Oliver.

“Why?”

Nathan asked him.

Oliver stared at the paused image.

“I thought I forgot.”

“What?”

“The man.”

Nathan sat beside him.

Oliver remembered being near the boathouse.

Conrad calling his name.

Conrad telling him Nathan had asked for him.

Then a sweet smell on a cloth.

Darkness.

The memory ended there.

Nathan pulled him close.

“You don’t have to remember anything else.”

Oliver nodded.

But later he returned to the recorder files.

The earliest file contained something they had overlooked.

Before Vanessa’s voice.

Before Gavin.

There were twenty seconds of sound recorded accidentally when Miriam first tested the device.

A distant conversation came through the wall.

Conrad.

And another man.

Unknown.

The second man said, “Nathan still thinks this begins with the boy.”

Conrad answered.

“He’ll never know how long it’s been in motion.”

The unknown man laughed.

“Your father would’ve been proud.”

Nathan stared at the audio technician.

“Whose father?”

No one knew.

Conrad had always claimed Project Heir was his own design.

But that recording suggested someone else understood it.

Someone older.

Someone who spoke as though Conrad himself had inherited the plan.

Brooks reopened records from Nathan’s father’s era.

Vale Holdings had survived multiple unexplained corporate crises.

A whistleblower died before testifying.

A minority shareholder disappeared overseas.

A former CFO suffered a fatal accident.

Thirty years of convenient tragedies.

Nathan felt cold.

Project Heir might not have started with Claire.

Or Vanessa.

Or even Conrad.

It may have existed before Nathan inherited the company.

The perfect Vale dynasty had been built on secrets.

And Oliver’s recorder had opened the first wall.
