Chapter 14 - THE CONFESSION

Nathan survived.

The bullet passed through his upper shoulder without striking major arteries.

Oliver sat beside his hospital bed with crossed arms.

“You said you weren’t going to get hurt.”

Nathan almost smiled.

“I said I would try.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“No.”

Oliver glared at him.

Nathan held out his good arm.

Oliver climbed carefully beside him.

“Don’t do it again.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“That still sounds bad.”

Nathan laughed for the first time in weeks.

Across town Vanessa began confessing.

Not because she suddenly found a conscience.

Because Conrad had betrayed her.

She gave detectives dates.

Accounts.

Codes.

Names.

She described Project Heir from the beginning.

Conrad approached her while she worked around Claire’s medical network.

He learned she had a secret son.

He learned she wanted Julian to have a better life.

He fed her resentment.

Told her families like the Vales hoarded wealth through bloodlines.

Told her Claire was destroying the company.

At first Vanessa only provided information.

Schedules.

Contacts.

Medical billing records.

Then Conrad engineered her introduction to Nathan after Claire died.

Vanessa insisted she had not caused Claire’s cancer.

Investigators believed that part.

But then Brooks asked about treatment interference.

Vanessa stopped speaking.

Her lawyer leaned toward her.

Too late.

The hesitation answered the question.

Eventually she admitted she altered one medication delivery after Conrad pressured her.

Only once, she claimed.

Conrad told her it would merely delay treatment.

She said she never knew it could worsen Claire’s condition.

Nathan listened to the recorded confession in silence.

There would never be certainty that the altered medication caused Claire’s death.

Her disease had already been advanced.

But Vanessa had tampered with treatment.

That was enough.

Nathan went into the hospital bathroom and was sick.

Later he sat alone beside the window.

Oliver entered quietly.

“Was it about Mom?”

Nathan nodded.

Oliver climbed into the chair beside him.

Neither spoke for a while.

Then Oliver said, “I remember her laugh.”

Nathan turned.

Claire.

“What about it?”

“She laughed when she burned pancakes.”

Nathan smiled sadly.

“She burned everything.”

Oliver smiled too.

Nathan realized something important.

Conrad and Vanessa had stolen years.

But they did not own the memories that remained.

Nathan reached for his son’s hand.

Detective Brooks arrived that evening.

“Vanessa gave us a location.”

“Conrad?”

“Possibly.”

“Where?”

“A private archive facility outside Boston.”

Conrad maintained a storage unit there under a shell corporation.

Inside agents found boxes of Vale family documents.

Records spanning thirty-two years.

Nathan’s father.

Claire.

Nathan.

Oliver.

Entire lives cataloged.

But Conrad was gone.

On the floor of the unit, investigators discovered a map.

One location was circled.

Margaret Vale’s townhouse.

Nathan’s heart stopped.

He called his mother.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

Margaret.

Nathan answered instantly.

“Mom?”

A man spoke.

“Your mother is fine.”

Nathan recognized the voice.

Conrad.

“For now.”

Nathan stood.

“What do you want?”

“What I have always wanted.”

“The trust?”

“No.”

Conrad laughed softly.

“Control.”

Nathan looked toward Oliver.

His son was watching him.

Conrad continued.

“Bring the original memory card.”

“Come home.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“Which home?”

May you like

“The one where your son learned the truth.”

The Vale estate.
