Chapter 9 - THE TERMINAL

Whitmore Terminal had been abandoned for twenty-seven years.

Broken glass covered sections of the roof.

Old platforms disappeared into darkness.

A clock above the main hall had stopped at 2:17.

Alexander remembered that clock.

He had been twenty-four when Elena stood beneath it with a suitcase.

He had told her he could not abandon his family obligations.

She had told him she refused to become another decoration inside the Whitmore empire.

They had said goodbye.

Alexander made it to the parking lot before turning around.

He ran back.

Elena was still under the clock.

Neither of them left.

They married two years later.

Now, nearly two decades after that night, Julian had brought her back.

Police surrounded the terminal before dawn.

Thermal cameras identified four people inside.

One in the main concourse.

Two near a lower platform.

One in an enclosed office.

Alexander looked at Keller.

“Which one is Elena?”

“We don’t know.”

A medical helicopter waited nearby.

Negotiators attempted contact.

No response.

Then the old public-address speakers crackled.

Julian’s voice filled the terminal.

“Alexander.”

Alexander looked upward.

Keller immediately signaled technicians.

“Do not answer until we establish source.”

Julian continued.

“You always did make everyone come running.”

Alexander stared at the building.

“Can he hear us?”

Keller nodded toward a microphone.

“Yes.”

Alexander took it.

“Let Elena go.”

Julian laughed through the speakers.

“You sound like your father.”

“My father is dead.”

“So is your authority.”

“I don’t care about the company.”

“That is a lie.”

Alexander looked at Daniel.

Then toward the microphone.

“Try me.”

Julian’s voice sharpened.

“You would give away everything?”

“For Elena and the baby?”

“Yes.”

“No negotiation?”

“No.”

A pause.

Julian had not expected that.

Neither had Daniel.

Alexander continued.

“You want the shares?”

“I’ll sign them away.”

“Release Elena first.”

Julian laughed.

“She always said you would choose her.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“She was right.”

Another silence.

Then a woman screamed in the background.

Alexander’s face changed.

“Elena!”

The microphone cut out.

Keller’s team prepared to enter.

Then Julian returned.

“She is having the baby.”

Alexander gripped the microphone.

“She needs a hospital.”

“She has a doctor.”

“Who?”

Julian did not answer.

Keller whispered.

“We detected movement.”

One heat signature moved from the concourse toward the lower platform.

A second followed.

Alexander spoke again.

“Julian.”

“What?”

“You wanted Whitmore control because my father humiliated you.”

“No.”

“He made you feel small.”

Julian’s voice hardened.

“Careful.”

“You spent thirty years proving you deserved his chair.”

“I deserved more than Richard ever gave me.”

Alexander nodded toward Keller.

She understood.

Keep him emotional.

Keep him talking.

“And now you’re hiding in an abandoned train terminal holding a pregnant woman hostage.”

Julian shouted.

“That woman is the reason your bloodline continues!”

Alexander looked at Keller.

Confirmation.

Elena was with him.

Julian continued.

“I created the heir you were too weak to produce.”

Alexander’s anger flashed.

But he controlled it.

“You stole an embryo.”

“I preserved the family.”

“You violated my wife.”

“History does not care about feelings.”

Alexander whispered.

“My child will.”

The speaker went silent.

Then Keller raised one finger.

Source located.

Lower west office.

Teams moved.

Inside the terminal, officers entered through two service corridors.

Body-camera images appeared.

Broken benches.

Old ticket counters.

Dark stairs.

Then a gunshot.

Another.

Police shouted.

One suspect down.

The thermal feed showed a figure running.

Julian.

A second heat signature remained in the office.

Elena.

Alexander moved forward.

Keller grabbed him.

“Not yet.”

A tactical officer forced the door.

Inside was Elena.

She lay on a mattress.

Her face was pale.

Her hair was wet with sweat.

One hand clutched her stomach.

A terrified young physician crouched beside her.

The officer shouted.

“Medical emergency!”

Alexander stared at the screen.

“Elena.”

She was alive.

She was conscious.

And she was about to give birth.

Then the body camera captured Elena whispering something.

The officer leaned closer.

“What?”

Elena struggled to speak.

“Julian.”

“He has the embryo records.”

Keller frowned.

“Why do they matter now?”

Elena’s eyes opened.

“Because there were two embryos.”

Alexander stared at the screen.

May you like

Elena whispered.

“He implanted both.”
