Chapter 11 - THE CHILD JULIAN WANTED

DNA results took three days.
Those three days were some of the strangest in Alexander’s life.
Elena remained hospitalized.
The smaller twin, whom Elena called Noah, stayed in neonatal care.
The stronger baby, later named Ethan, slept beside her.
Alexander visited but never entered without asking.
It was painful to watch.
They were husband and wife legally when Elena vanished.
But Alexander had married Vanessa after Elena was declared dead.
Three years could not simply disappear because Elena had been found.
He stood outside her room the first morning.
“Can I come in?”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
He sat across the room.
Not beside her.
She noticed.
“You can sit closer.”
Alexander moved to the chair near the bed.
For several minutes, they watched Ethan sleep.
Then Elena asked.
“Did you love Vanessa?”
Alexander did not lie.
“I thought I did.”
Elena nodded.
The answer hurt.
But a lie would have hurt more.
“I saw photographs.”
“I know.”
“She sent wedding pictures.”
Alexander looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“You thought I was dead.”
“I should have looked harder.”
Elena stared at him.
“I was declared dead.”
“Dental records.”
“Police.”
“A burned vehicle.”
“You had no reason to think I was alive.”
Alexander shook his head.
“I knew you.”
“I should have known.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“You cannot rewrite three years because you feel guilty.”
He looked at her.
“Neither can you.”
She nodded.
It was the first honest conversation they had shared since her rescue.
Not romantic.
Not easy.
But real.
Later that afternoon, Sophie visited.
She entered Elena’s room nervously.
Elena smiled.
“You’re Sophie.”
Sophie nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena looked confused.
“For what?”
“I said your belly was a sofa pillow.”
Elena stared for one second.
Then laughed so hard she had to hold her incision.
Alexander laughed too.
Sophie looked relieved.
Elena reached toward her.
“You may have saved all three of us.”
Sophie looked at Ethan.
“Which baby is real?”
The adults became silent.
I quickly said.
“They are both real babies.”
Sophie frowned.
“I mean which one belongs to him.”
She pointed at Alexander.
Elena looked at Alexander.
Then toward the nursery.
“We’ll know soon.”
The results arrived that evening.
Keller.
Daniel.
Alexander.
Elena.
All were present.
A genetic counselor opened the report.
“Baby A, Ethan, is the biological child of Elena Whitmore and Alexander Whitmore.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Elena squeezed his hand without thinking.
Neither pulled away.
The counselor continued.
“Baby B, Noah, is the biological child of Elena Whitmore.”
Alexander stared.
“And the father?”
The counselor looked toward Keller.
“Julian Cross.”
Nobody spoke.
Elena’s face emptied of emotion.
Alexander stood.
Keller caught his arm.
“Alexander.”
He pulled away.
Not violently.
Just stunned.
Julian had used his own genetic material.
One embryo created from Alexander and Elena.
Another created from Julian and Elena.
Neither procedure had involved Elena’s consent.
Daniel looked sick.
“Why?”
Keller answered.
“Control.”
If Alexander’s baby survived, Julian could control him through the child.
If Alexander’s baby did not survive, Julian had created a child of his own biological line with Elena, potentially giving his branch another route into inheritance litigation.
It was monstrous.
And calculated.
Elena looked at Noah through the nursery glass.
“He’s innocent.”
Alexander stood beside her.
“Yes.”
“He didn’t choose who his biological father is.”
“No.”
Elena started crying.
“I don’t know how to look at him without remembering.”
Alexander did not pretend to understand.
“You don’t have to know today.”
She turned toward him.
“What happens to him?”
Alexander answered immediately.
“He stays with you.”
Elena stared.
“And if you want him to stay with us, he stays with us.”
Her face crumpled.
“You would raise Julian’s child?”
Alexander looked through the glass.
Noah weighed barely five pounds.
Tiny hands.
Tiny chest.
Nothing about him resembled a conspiracy.
“He’s not Julian’s plan.”
Alexander said.
“He’s a baby.”
Elena began sobbing.
Alexander held her for the first time.
Not as a husband claiming his wife.
As one survivor holding another.
Across the hallway, Daniel received another message.
He opened it.
His face changed.
“What?”
Keller asked.
Daniel turned the screen.
Julian had filed something before disappearing.
A legal petition.
He had established a trust naming himself the father of Elena’s second child.
And in the attached statement, he claimed Elena had willingly participated in the pregnancy.
Her forged signature appeared at the bottom.
May you like
Julian was preparing to claim Noah.
Even from hiding.
