Chapter 12 - ELENA SPEAKS
The public had spent years believing Elena Whitmore was dead.
Now every major news network wanted her story.
Elena refused all interviews for two weeks.
Then Julian’s attorneys released the forged declaration.
It described an invented relationship between Elena and Julian.
It claimed Elena had secretly chosen him as the biological father.
It claimed she had hidden from Alexander voluntarily.
It even claimed Nathan Vale had helped her escape an unhappy marriage.
The lies spread rapidly.
Elena watched one television segment from her hospital room.
Then turned it off.
Alexander stood near the window.
“I’ll have Daniel stop them.”
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“I’m done letting other people explain my life.”
Three days later, Elena spoke publicly.
Not at a press conference.
Not in a ballroom.
She recorded a statement with Detective Keller present.
She wore a simple blue sweater.
No jewelry.
No makeup beyond what she chose herself.
Alexander was not beside her.
That was intentional.
Elena wanted the world to hear her without a powerful husband speaking for her.
“My name is Elena Whitmore.”
She began.
“Three years ago, I was declared dead.”
“I was not dead.”
“I was kidnapped.”
The room became completely still.
“I did not leave my husband voluntarily.”
“I did not enter a relationship with Julian Cross.”
“I did not consent to either pregnancy procedure performed while I was being held.”
“I did not authorize anyone to use stored embryos.”
“And I did not agree to create a child with Julian Cross.”
She stopped for several seconds.
Then continued.
“I am speaking because two children were born from crimes committed against me.”
“Those children are not crimes.”
“They are not evidence.”
“They are not corporate assets.”
“They are children.”
Alexander watched from another room.
His eyes filled with tears.
Elena continued.
“One of those boys is biologically my husband’s.”
“The other is biologically related to the man who arranged my captivity.”
“I love both of them.”
“Whatever adults do in court, nobody will teach either child that he is worth less because of the circumstances of his birth.”
The statement changed public opinion almost immediately.
But more importantly, it changed the legal fight.
Julian’s attorneys withdrew from representing him after investigators proved Elena’s signature had been forged.
The guardianship claim weakened.
The Whitmore board suspended all succession-related transfers.
Daniel rewrote emergency corporate governance provisions to keep the children out of immediate control disputes.
Then Nathan asked to speak to Elena.
She refused.
He asked again.
She refused again.
On the third request, Nathan gave Keller a message.
Tell Elena I know where Julian keeps the originals.
Elena agreed to hear him through video.
Nathan appeared from jail.
His shoulder was healing.
He looked thinner.
“Elena.”
She did not respond.
“I am sorry.”
“No.”
Nathan looked confused.
Elena leaned toward the screen.
“You do not get to use that sentence to make yourself feel better.”
Nathan lowered his eyes.
“You kidnapped me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me beg to go home.”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“I thought eventually you would understand.”
Elena stared at him.
“That is the part that frightens me most.”
Nathan said nothing.
“You still think what you did was love.”
His face collapsed.
Elena continued.
“Love would have opened the door.”
She sat back.
“Now tell Detective Keller where the records are.”
Nathan nodded.
Julian maintained a private archive in an underground vault beneath an old Cross family property in Connecticut.
Nathan had seen the vault once.
It contained contracts.
Bank records.
Medical documents.
Audio recordings.
Original signatures.
And a handwritten journal Julian kept because he trusted paper more than computers.
Keller obtained warrants.
The property was raided.
The vault existed.
Inside were decades of records.
Proof that Julian had funded Elena’s kidnapping.
Proof of Nathan’s role.
Proof of Vanessa and Cynthia’s payments.
Proof of medical fraud.
And evidence connecting Julian to the deaths of three former business partners.
But Julian himself remained missing.
Then investigators opened the final cabinet.
Inside was a folder labeled E.W. - FINAL.
The first page contained photographs of Elena.
The second contained the embryo information.
The third contained a plan.
Daniel read it once.
Then again.
His face went white.
Alexander took the page.
At the top were five words.
PHASE FOUR: DEATH OF ALEXANDER.
Below was a date.
Two weeks from now.
