Chapter 18 - What Trust Costs

Three weeks later, Elena returned to the estate.

Not as an employee.

Marcus had offered her job back immediately.

She refused.

He understood.

Instead, she came to collect the last of her belongings.

Marcus waited in the foyer.

He had considered leaving the house while she packed.

But running from the conversation felt cowardly.

Elena carried a small box downstairs.

Marcus looked toward it.

“That’s everything?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I transferred the medical expenses for your injury.”

Elena’s expression tightened.

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“I know.”

“And the additional money?”

“Compensation.”

She looked at him.

“I’m not accepting money because you feel guilty.”

“It isn’t guilt.”

“What is it?”

“Responsibility.”

Elena studied him.

Marcus continued.

“You were injured saving my son.”

“Then pay what the law requires.”

“I did.”

“Good.”

“And the rest?”

She waited.

“It’s a trust fund for your mother’s care and Sofia’s tuition.”

Elena stared at him.

“No.”

“Listen first.”

“I said no.”

“It doesn’t require you to work for me.”

“That’s not the problem.”

“Then what is?”

Elena set the box down.

“The problem is you still think you can solve everything by controlling the outcome.”

Marcus went silent.

She stepped closer.

“You couldn’t control Natalie’s illness.”

“You couldn’t control Victoria.”

“You couldn’t control what happened by the pool.”

“So now you’re trying to control what happens to my family.”

Marcus looked down.

She was right.

Again.

“What should I do?”

Elena gave a sad smile.

“For once?”

“Yes.”

“Ask.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

Then he tried again.

“Would you allow me to pay Sofia’s remaining tuition as part of the settlement?”

Elena thought.

“She has one semester.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Marcus almost smiled.

“Victoria had files on everyone.”

The humor vanished immediately.

“Sorry.”

Elena sighed.

“One semester.”

“And your mother?”

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

“Okay.”

She seemed surprised he accepted it immediately.

Marcus picked up her box.

“May I carry this outside?”

Elena considered.

“Yes.”

They walked toward her car.

At the driveway, Marcus stopped.

“My son misses you.”

Elena looked through the window toward the nursery.

“He’s a baby.”

“He still does.”

She smiled slightly.

Marcus felt something unfamiliar.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something quieter.

Respect, perhaps.

And regret.

Elena opened her car door.

Before getting inside, she turned.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“If you really want to change something, change the house.”

He frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your staff were afraid to speak.”

Marcus listened.

“Victoria walked through your home like she owned everyone because people believed you would believe her first.”

The words hurt.

“You built a beautiful house.”

Elena continued.

“But nobody should be afraid to tell the owner what is happening inside it.”

Marcus looked back at the estate.

For the first time, he saw what she meant.

Security was not cameras.

Trust was not loyalty demanded from others.

It had to be earned.

Marcus nodded.

“I’ll change it.”

Elena got into her car.

May you like

“We’ll see.”

Then she drove away.
