Chapter 17 - The Empty Hand

“Hands!”
Police shouted from every direction.
Marcus froze.
Victoria’s hand remained inside her coat.
“Victoria.”
His voice was quiet.
She looked at him.
Officers raised their weapons.
“Show us your hands!”
Victoria smiled strangely.
“Do you remember Natalie’s blue dress?”
Marcus’s heart pounded.
“What?”
“The first night I saw you together.”
“Victoria.”
“She wore blue.”
Marcus remembered.
A university fundraiser.
Natalie had worn a dark blue dress.
Victoria had been there.
He had never noticed her.
That was the beginning of everything.
Victoria slowly withdrew her hand.
Marcus held his breath.
Empty.
Nothing.
She had no weapon.
She only wanted everyone to believe she might.
Detective Cole shouted.
“Don’t move!”
Victoria lifted both hands.
Tears ran down her face.
“I just wanted one moment where everyone looked at me.”
Officers entered.
They placed her against the wall.
Handcuffs closed around her wrists.
She did not fight.
As police escorted her through the doorway, she turned toward Marcus.
“Did Natalie ever tell you she forgave me?”
Marcus stared at her.
“No.”
Victoria’s face collapsed.
That was the answer she had feared.
Officers led her toward the vehicle.
Marcus stood motionless.
The chase was over.
But the damage remained.
Victoria was charged with attempted child endangerment, kidnapping, stalking, unlawful surveillance, assault, conspiracy, blackmail, witness intimidation, and multiple digital crimes.
Additional charges would depend on the investigation into Natalie’s hospital stay.
Forensic specialists reviewed the medical records for weeks.
They found no evidence Victoria caused Natalie’s death.
The timing was disturbing.
Her presence was unexplained.
But Natalie had been critically ill.
Doctors concluded the respiratory failure was consistent with her condition.
Marcus accepted the finding.
Not because he trusted Victoria.
Because Elena had been right.
He refused to allow Victoria to rewrite Natalie’s final memory without proof.
Daniel accepted a cooperation agreement.
His testimony confirmed the blackmail scheme and helped recover every hidden recording.
He still faced prison.
But he gave police enough evidence to understand the entire operation.
When Marcus returned to the hospital, Elena was sitting beside the crib.
His son held one of her fingers.
Marcus stopped in the doorway.
Elena looked up.
“Is it over?”
“She’s in custody.”
Elena exhaled.
Marcus walked closer.
The baby reached toward him.
Marcus picked him up.
For several seconds, he simply held his son.
Then he looked at Elena.
“I owe you more than an apology.”
“You already apologized.”
“It wasn’t enough.”
Elena was quiet.
Marcus continued.
“I judged you because I was scared.”
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“I know.”
“I could have left after the first threat.”
“You should have told me.”
Elena looked directly at him.
“I tried.”
Marcus nodded.
“I know.”
There was nothing else to say.
That truth would stay with him.
May you like
She had tried.
He had failed to listen.
