Chapter 17 - THE ONE THING HIS MOTHER COULDN’T EXPLAIN

His mother filed a petition seeking visitation.
Her attorney presented her as a grieving grandmother caught in the middle of her son’s marriage.
Rachel introduced the video of her trying my old key.
Then the messages.
Then her handwritten note from the crib.
Then the 911 recording.
Her attorney tried to explain each one separately.
The keys were a misunderstanding.
The messages were emotional.
The note was concern.
The bathroom conversation had been chaotic.
Then Rachel produced the bank records.
Several transfers from our joint savings had gone into an account controlled by my husband.
From there, two payments had been made directly to his mother.
One occurred the day before my delivery.
The other occurred the morning after the assault.
His mother claimed they were repayments for a family loan.
Rachel asked for documentation.
There was none.
Then came the question that changed the room.
“Why did you receive five thousand dollars from your son less than twenty-four hours after taking his wife’s car keys, removing documents from her home, and telling police she was unstable?”
His mother opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Looked toward her attorney.
For the first time since this started, she had no answer ready.
The judge denied her request for immediate visitation.
The matter could be reviewed again in the future, but there would be no access now.
Outside the courtroom, she saw me near the elevator.
Her attorney was several feet away.
She stepped closer.
“You think you won.”
Rachel moved between us.
His mother looked around her.
Her eyes remained on mine.
“He will grow up asking why you took his family from him.”
The elevator doors opened.
I held my son closer.
Then I answered.
“No.”
May you like
My voice was calm.
“He’ll grow up knowing why I saved it.”
