Chapter 13 - HIS MOTHER CHOSE A SIDE

His mother asked to speak to me through attorneys.
Rachel advised against a private conversation.
So her statement arrived in writing.
She claimed she had been manipulated by her son.
She claimed she had never approved of violence.
She claimed she had taken my keys that morning because she feared I might drive while “emotionally distressed.”
I read that sentence three times.
Then I laughed.
My sister looked over.
“What?”
“She’s trying to turn stealing my keys into protecting me.”
Rachel didn’t laugh.
“She may be trying to distance herself from him.”
The statement continued.
She said she regretted not helping me sooner.
She said she loved her grandson.
Then, near the end, she made her real request.
She wanted access to the baby.
Supervised if necessary.
My hands tightened around the paper.
“No.”
Rachel looked at me.
“We can oppose it.”
“She threw him.”
“I know.”
“She took my keys.”
“I know.”
“She helped him hide money.”
“I know.”
“She stood outside the bathroom and told me I was the problem.”
Rachel held my gaze.
“Then say no.”
So I did.
Not maybe.
Not later.
Not when things calm down.
No.
His mother responded by becoming angry again.
The apology disappeared.
She accused me of cruelty.
She accused my family of brainwashing me.
She claimed grandparents had rights.
She threatened court.
Rachel documented everything.
Then Melissa gave a formal statement.
That was the turning point.
She confirmed my husband had lied about our separation.
She confirmed his mother had met her multiple times.
She confirmed the secret apartment.
Most importantly, she confirmed something that made even Rachel go quiet.
Two days before I gave birth, my husband told Melissa he expected to have “full control of the house and baby situation” within a month.
Melissa had asked how.
He answered.
My mom knows what to do.
No one could prove exactly what that meant.
But suddenly his mother’s behavior on the morning of the assault no longer looked spontaneous.
Taking the keys.
Searching my purse.
Removing documents.
Moving money.
Calling me unstable.
Maybe the violence itself had not been planned.
May you like
But everything afterward had been ready.
And that possibility terrified me more than rage ever had.
