Chapter 14 - LEARNING SAFE

Leo began therapy.

At first, he barely spoke.

He preferred sitting under tables.

He hid crackers inside toy boxes.

He cried whenever someone spilled water because the sound reminded him of Helena kicking the bucket.

Carmine attended every session he was allowed to attend.

Business meetings moved around Leo’s schedule.

Executives complained.

Carmine fired two.

The others stopped complaining.

One afternoon, Leo refused lunch.

Carmine sat across from him.

“You don’t have to eat.”

Leo looked suspicious.

“No hungry punishment?”

“No.”

“Even if bad?”

Carmine’s chest tightened.

“You are not bad.”

Leo looked down.

“Helena said.”

“I know.”

“She said Mommy left because I cried.”

Carmine went completely still.

“What?”

Leo repeated it softly.

“She said Mommy went away because I cried too much.”

Carmine had to look away.

Helena’s cruelty had reached places he had not imagined.

He crouched beside Leo.

“Look at me.”

Leo slowly did.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.”

Leo stared at him.

“You did not make her leave.”

“You did not make anything bad happen.”

Leo’s eyes filled with tears.

“Promise?”

Carmine nodded.

“I promise.”

Leo threw his arms around his father’s neck.

Carmine held him.

That evening, Carmine removed every photograph of Helena from the house.

Not because he wanted to erase history.

Because Leo deserved spaces that did not belong to fear.

He reopened Sofia’s old nursery.

Together, father and son cleaned it.

This time, cleaning was not punishment.

Carmine gave Leo a tiny feather duster.

Leo laughed while chasing dust across the shelves.

When they found the empty place where the music box had once sat, Leo pointed.

“Song?”

Carmine nodded.

“Your mom used to play it for you.”

“Where?”

Carmine brought the recovered music box downstairs.

He placed it on the shelf.

Then he turned the key.

The old melody filled the room.

Leo became very still.

Something in his expression changed.

“Know.”

Carmine looked at him.

“You remember?”

Leo touched the box.

“Mommy song.”

Carmine’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“Mommy song.”

They sat together until the melody stopped.

For the first time, Carmine allowed himself to cry in front of his son.

Leo touched his cheek.

“Daddy sad?”

“Yes.”

Leo hugged him.

“It okay.”

Carmine laughed through the tears.

Three years old.

And somehow Leo was teaching him how to survive.
