Chapter 11 - SOFIA’S LAST CALL

Ada had kept the recording for two years.
She never listened to it again.
She had been too afraid to destroy it.
Too ashamed to reveal it.
Now she placed an old phone on Dr. Russo’s desk.
Carmine stared at it.
“My wife called you.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
Ada began crying.
“I thought they would kill Leo.”
Carmine’s face hardened.
“They were already hurting him.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You chose not to know.”
Ada lowered her head.
Carmine wanted to hate her.
Part of him did.
But another part saw what Vittorio had built.
Fear.
Blackmail.
Isolation.
He used people’s families against them.
Exactly as he had used Leo against Carmine.
Ada pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Sofia’s voice.
Weak.
Breathless.
“Carmine.”
Carmine closed his eyes.
Leo looked toward him.
Sofia continued.
“If this reaches you, Vittorio is alive.”
Carmine’s eyes opened.
“He arranged the boat.”
“Matteo helped with the accounts.”
“Helena was watching me.”
A sound interrupted the recording.
A vehicle door.
Then Sofia whispered quickly.
“Do not trade Leo for revenge.”
Carmine’s throat tightened.
“Protect him.”
“Be his father before you become anything else.”
The recording ended.
Carmine sat completely still.
For two years, he had replayed Sofia’s death in his mind.
Now he had heard her final message.
And her last request had not been vengeance.
It had been Leo.
Carmine looked toward his son.
The boy was drawing circles on a piece of paper.
Alive.
Safe.
For the first time, Carmine understood what Sofia had been trying to tell him.
Vittorio expected men like Carmine to choose pride.
Violence.
Revenge.
Power.
That was how Vittorio controlled them.
Carmine picked up the phone.
“Marco.”
“Yes?”
“Notify the state police.”
Marco sounded surprised.
“About everything?”
“Everything.”
“The accounts.”
“The kidnapping.”
“The boat.”
“Sofia’s recording.”
There was a pause.
“You know what that opens.”
Carmine did.
The Bellucci organization had survived for decades by keeping authorities at a distance.
Turning over financial records would expose legitimate companies.
It might expose illegal ones too.
It could cost Carmine millions.
Maybe more.
“I know.”
Marco waited.
Carmine looked at Leo.
“Do it.”
That night, Carmine made a second decision.
He contacted an attorney specializing in organized-crime cooperation and corporate restructuring.
He began separating his legal businesses from every operation connected to violence or illegal money.
It would take months.
Maybe years.
But it started that night.
Because Sofia had been right.
Leo needed a father.
Not an empire.
At dawn, police located Helena.
She was found at a motel near the Wisconsin border.
She had cash.
A fake passport.
And one of Vittorio’s phones.
When Carmine arrived at the interview room, Helena looked exhausted.
There was no makeup.
No designer dress.
No performance.
Carmine sat across from her.
“You ran.”
“He tried to kill me.”
“You helped him kidnap Leo.”
Helena looked away.
“I was trying to survive.”
“So was Leo.”
That landed.
Helena stared at the table.
Carmine continued.
“Vittorio abandoned you.”
“Yes.”
“He never planned to pay you.”
“No.”
“You know where he went.”
Helena hesitated.
Carmine leaned forward.
“This is the last chance you will ever have to do one useful thing for that child.”
Helena closed her eyes.
Then whispered.
“He has another property.”
“Where?”
“Lake Geneva.”
“Not under his name.”
“Whose?”
May you like
Helena looked at Carmine.
“Yours.”
