Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BESIDE THE CRIB

“Step back from that crib right now!”

Sarah Mitchell’s voice cracked through the nursery like a gunshot.

Victoria Hale froze beside the antique white crib, one hand hidden behind her back.

Inside the crib, six-month-old Noah Reed slept beneath a pale blue blanket, completely unaware that two women were standing less than three feet away from him with very different intentions.

Victoria slowly turned around.

Her perfectly styled blonde hair framed a face that had gone from surprise to hatred in less than a second.

“You are just a maid in this house.”

Sarah moved between Victoria and the crib.

“I will not let you hurt him.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“He does not belong in this family inheritance.”

Sarah felt her stomach tighten.

That sentence told her everything.

For weeks, she had suspected something was wrong.

Missing documents.

Locked drawers that were suddenly unlocked.

Private calls Victoria ended whenever Sarah entered a room.

Questions about Mark Reed’s late brother.

Questions about Noah’s birth certificate.

Questions about the Reed family trust.

Until that afternoon, Sarah had only possessed suspicions.

Now she had proof.

And Victoria knew it.

Footsteps thundered down the hallway.

“What is going on in my house?”

Mark Reed appeared in the doorway.

At forty-two, Mark carried the quiet authority of a man who had spent twenty years building businesses, protecting employees, and cleaning up disasters caused by people who underestimated him.

But the sight before him clearly confused him.

Sarah stood in front of the crib.

Victoria stood near the window.

Several papers trembled in Sarah’s hands.

“Look at what she was trying to do.”

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“Mark, she is lying to you.”

Sarah held the papers out.

“I have the proof right here in my hands.”

Mark stepped forward and took them.

Victoria’s face changed.

For the first time since Sarah had worked at the Reed estate, the elegant woman looked frightened.

Mark scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His jaw tightened.

“Is this true, Victoria?”

“You cannot trust a word she says.”

“I am looking at the legal papers myself.”

“Please let me explain everything.”

Mark raised his eyes.

“Get out of my house before I call the police.”

Victoria stared at him.

Then she laughed.

It was not the laugh of a woman who had been defeated.

It was the laugh of someone who believed everyone else had just made a terrible mistake.

“You really think Sarah saved you?”

Mark said nothing.

Victoria picked up her handbag.

“You have no idea what is actually happening in this family.”

She walked toward the door.

When she passed Sarah, she leaned close enough that only Sarah could hear her whisper.

“You should have stayed invisible.”

Then she left.

Mark waited until the sound of her heels disappeared down the staircase.

“What exactly did you find?”

Sarah looked at Noah.

Then she looked at the papers.

“We need to lock every door in this house.”

Mark frowned.

“Why?”

May you like

Sarah swallowed.

“Because those documents are not the worst thing I found.”
