Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING

Detective Alvarez played the audio for Evelyn and Vincent in a private interview room the following morning.
Sophie was not present.
Evelyn had refused to let her hear it.
The recording began with fabric moving against the microphone.
Then footsteps.
Then Diane’s voice.
“If the child saw anything, make sure nobody believes her.”
Grant responded.
“She’s seven, Diane.”
“That makes it easier.”
Preston spoke next.
“She already lies about stupid things.”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
Sophie did not lie.
Preston continued.
“I’ll say she’s been stealing at school.”
Grant sounded nervous.
“What if Evelyn denies it?”
“Evelyn always denies everything.”
Diane laughed.
Then came the sentence that made Evelyn’s hands shake.
“Once Vincent thinks the girl stole from us, he’ll pay just to make the scandal disappear.”
Grant asked.
“How much?”
Preston answered.
“Minimum ten million.”
Evelyn looked toward Detective Alvarez.
Maria paused the recording.
“He planned to extort my father?”
“It appears that way.”
Vincent said nothing.
His face had gone completely still.
Maria resumed.
Grant’s voice came through.
“And Celeste?”
Preston answered.
“She signs tonight.”
“What if she reads it?”
Diane said.
“She won’t.”
“Her father will.”
“Robert will be busy with guests.”
Preston laughed.
“And once the money clears, we’re gone.”
There was rustling.
Then Grant spoke.
“I don’t like using the kid.”
Preston answered instantly.
“She’s useful.”
Evelyn covered her mouth.
For years she had wondered whether Preston loved Sophie in his own broken way.
He sent expensive birthday presents.
He posted photographs from father-daughter weekends.
He told people Sophie was his “little princess.”
But when his survival depended on sacrificing someone, he had chosen her without hesitation.
His own child was useful.
Nothing more.
The audio continued.
Diane asked.
“Where’s the necklace?”
Preston replied.
“In the service elevator.”
Grant cursed.
“You moved it?”
“I didn’t want it on me.”
“Where exactly?”
“Inside the floral crate marked W-17.”
Detective Alvarez paused the recording.
Vincent looked at her.
“Did you search the service elevator?”
“We did.”
“And?”
“The crate was gone.”
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
“Who removed it?”
“We’re checking.”
Maria continued playing the file.
Grant spoke again.
“If that necklace disappears completely, this becomes bigger than we planned.”
Preston laughed.
“That’s the point.”
“What does that mean?”
“Insurance.”
Diane immediately said.
“Preston.”
But Preston continued.
“The Hales report the necklace stolen.”
“We collect the insurance payout.”
“Vincent pays to protect his granddaughter.”
“Celeste’s trust covers the rest.”
Grant whispered.
“That’s three crimes.”
Preston corrected him.
“That’s three solutions.”
The recording ended with a door opening.
Then Sophie’s tiny voice somewhere in the hallway.
“Mommy?”
Evelyn shut her eyes.
Detective Alvarez stopped the file.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Finally Vincent asked.
“What happens now?”
Maria folded her hands.
“We have conspiracy.”
“Attempted fraud.”
“Potential extortion.”
“Evidence tampering.”
“Possible insurance fraud.”
“And the assault on Sophie.”
“Preston’s attorney will challenge the recording.”
“Of course.”
“But his voice is clear.”
“So is Diane’s.”
Vincent stood.
“What about Grant?”
“He’s cooperating.”
“Because he’s innocent?”
“No.”
Maria’s expression remained flat.
“Because he’s scared.”
Vincent nodded.
“That can be useful.”
Maria looked at him.
“Do not become involved.”
He almost smiled.
“Detective.”
“I mean it.”
“I gave my granddaughter a promise.”
“What promise?”
“That nobody gets hurt.”
Maria studied him.
“And can you keep it?”
Vincent looked toward Evelyn.
Then toward the evidence bag.
“I have spent most of my life learning how to hurt people who threatened my family.”
May you like
He straightened his jacket.
“This may be the first time I get to destroy someone by telling the truth.”
