Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW

Celeste Whitmore had spent thirty-two years learning how to remain composed.

Her father had built Whitmore Medical Systems from a single laboratory into a company worth more than six billion dollars.

She had grown up around reporters, shareholders, charity boards, and people who smiled while measuring the value of everything in a room.

She knew how to stand still when she was furious.

She knew how to speak softly when she wanted someone to understand that a line had been crossed.

She turned toward Preston.

“My trust?”

Preston laughed.

“Grant doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

Grant stared at him.

“You told me exactly what it was.”

“Shut up.”

Detective Alvarez stepped between them.

“Mr. Hale.”

Preston stopped.

Alvarez turned to Grant.

“Continue.”

Grant rubbed both hands over his face.

“I’ve known Preston since college.”

No one interrupted.

“We invested together.”

Preston snapped.

“You invested nothing.”

Grant laughed again.

“There he is.”

Vincent watched quietly.

Grant continued.

“Three years ago, Preston bought into a commercial redevelopment project on the South Side.”

Celeste frowned.

“He told me that project was profitable.”

“It was supposed to be.”

“What happened?”

“Permits failed.”

“Then interest rates changed.”

“Then one of the other investors disappeared with several million dollars.”

Grant looked directly at Preston.

“Preston kept borrowing to cover old loans.”

Celeste’s voice became quieter.

“How much?”

Grant hesitated.

“More than thirty million.”

Several guests gasped.

Diane stepped forward.

“This is absurd.”

Grant turned toward her.

“You know exactly how much.”

Diane went silent.

Evelyn stared at her former mother-in-law.

Suddenly old memories began rearranging themselves.

Diane asking questions about Vincent’s properties.

Diane encouraging Evelyn to repair her marriage.

Diane insisting Sophie spend weekends at the Hale estate.

It had always felt intrusive.

Now it felt calculated.

Celeste looked at Preston.

“You’re thirty million dollars in debt?”

“It’s temporary.”

“You told me you were worth eighty million.”

“I am.”

Grant shook his head.

“On paper.”

Preston lunged toward him.

Two officers blocked him.

Grant continued.

“The Whitmore marriage was supposed to fix everything.”

Celeste’s face lost all color.

“What do you mean?”

Grant looked ashamed.

“Your trust becomes partially transferable after marriage.”

Celeste shook her head.

“Not without my signature.”

“Exactly.”

Grant pointed toward the silver key.

“That’s why the papers were in the box.”

Preston spoke quickly.

“They were standard marital documents.”

Celeste ignored him.

“Why remove them today?”

Grant looked toward Diane.

“She had a plan.”

Diane’s voice became icy.

“Be very careful.”

Grant smiled weakly.

“I’ve been careful for three years.”

He looked at Detective Alvarez.

“I’m done.”

Diane took a step toward him.

Marco moved between them.

She stopped.

Grant continued.

“The necklace was supposed to disappear.”

Evelyn tightened her arms around Sophie.

Celeste whispered.

“Supposed to?”

Grant nodded.

“It was never stolen.”

Preston closed his eyes.

Grant pointed toward Diane.

“She hid it herself.”

The ballroom erupted.

Diane shouted.

“He’s lying.”

Grant kept talking.

“The necklace creates chaos.”

“Security shuts down exits.”

“Everyone is distracted.”

“And while everyone is focused on finding it, Celeste gets taken upstairs to sign emergency financial documents before the reception ends.”

Celeste stared at Preston.

“You planned to make me sign something tonight?”

“You’re twisting it.”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Sophie.

“The only part Preston didn’t plan was Sophie seeing us.”

Evelyn felt sick.

Grant’s voice dropped.

“When Diane realized Sophie had been in the corridor, they needed someone to blame.”

Sophie buried her face against Evelyn.

May you like

Grant looked at Preston.

“So he chose his own daughter.”
