Chapter 18 - THE DEAD MAN’S OFFER

Thomas did not waste time.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

Arthur gripped the phone.

“My son?”

“Michael made his own choices.”

Elena stepped closer.

Arthur put the call on speaker.

Thomas heard the movement.

“Elena.”

Her skin crawled.

“You know my voice?”

“I know much more than your voice.”

“You used my name.”

“Victoria used your name.”

“You let her.”

“That was convenient.”

Arthur exploded.

“Did you kill Michael?”

Thomas remained silent.

Arthur shouted.

“Answer me.”

“I did not touch his brakes.”

Elena looked at Reed.

“Who did?”

Thomas answered.

“Ask Victoria.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“She says you controlled her.”

“Victoria says whatever keeps Victoria alive.”

Arthur forced himself to speak calmly.

“What do you want?”

“The original Caleb records.”

Elena looked at the evidence box beside Reed.

Thomas continued.

“And Michael’s memory card.”

“No.”

Arthur’s answer was immediate.

Thomas sighed.

“You still believe morality is useful once the truth becomes expensive.”

Arthur looked at Elena.

“I learned otherwise.”

Thomas laughed softly.

“From the Mercer girl?”

Elena stepped toward the phone.

“My name is Elena.”

“Of course.”

“You framed my grandfather.”

“William framed your grandfather.”

“You helped.”

“I protected the enterprise.”

“You destroyed a family.”

“I preserved thousands of jobs.”

“That is what cowards call collateral damage.”

Silence.

Then Thomas’s tone changed.

“I see why Michael loved you.”

Elena felt anger pulse through her.

“Don’t say his name.”

“He was brilliant.”

“He was also reckless.”

“You murdered him.”

“I told you, I did not cut the brakes.”

“But you ordered someone to end it.”

Thomas paused.

The recording had exposed him.

Reed signaled for technicians to continue tracing the call.

Thomas continued.

“Michael could have walked away.”

“He refused.”

“So you punished him.”

“No.”

“I contained risk.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

He had heard that kind of language his entire career.

Numbers instead of lives.

Exposure instead of betrayal.

Risk instead of murder.

“What happens now?” Arthur asked.

Thomas answered.

“You hand over the evidence.”

“And in return?”

“I disappear again.”

Elena laughed.

“That’s your offer?”

“You keep what remains of the company.”

“You avoid decades of litigation.”

“Your granddaughter grows up wealthy.”

Elena stared at the phone.

“My daughter already has something better.”

Thomas sounded amused.

“What?”

“A family that finally knows what you are.”

The line went quiet.

Reed raised one finger.

They had a trace.

Elena kept Thomas talking.

“Where did you go after your fake death?”

“Places where Whitmore money had already opened doors.”

“Why come back?”

“Because Michael found the system.”

“And Victoria?”

“Useful.”

“Vale?”

“Predictable.”

“Charles Jr.?”

“A mistake.”

Arthur’s eyes hardened.

“What was Jonathan?”

Thomas paused.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Yes.”

“What was I?”

Thomas answered.

“The future.”

Jonathan’s face twisted.

“What does that mean?”

“You were supposed to inherit control once Michael was removed.”

Elena looked at Jonathan.

Thomas continued.

“Victoria would then discredit you.”

“Arthur would be forced to restructure.”

“Vale would manage the transition.”

“And I would control Vale.”

Arthur stared.

“You planned to take everything.”

“No.”

“I planned to restore discipline.”

Reed whispered.

“Got him.”

The call terminated.

Within seconds, tactical teams received a location.

A private airfield outside Ridge County.

Thomas was preparing to leave the country.

Arthur wanted to go.

Reed refused.

Elena agreed.

“No more chasing criminals into buildings.”

Arthur looked offended.

“You did it.”

“And I learned.”

Jonathan almost smiled.

Forty minutes later, police surrounded the hangar.

Thomas Hale did not run.

He stood beside a small private jet wearing a dark overcoat.

For a supposedly dead man, he looked remarkably healthy.

Police arrested him without a shot.

Inside his luggage, investigators found three passports.

Five encrypted drives.

Copies of offshore ledgers.

And a handwritten list of payments connected to Michael’s crash.

Victoria’s name appeared twice.

One payment went to the mechanic who serviced Michael’s car.

Another went to a private investigator who followed him.

The mechanic was arrested before sunrise.

Under questioning, he confessed.

Victoria had paid him to weaken Michael’s brake line.

She told him it was only meant to frighten Michael.

Thomas later ordered him to make certain the car failed completely.

Two conspirators.

One murder.

One dead son.

The truth was finally complete.

But justice had one final obstacle.

May you like

Victoria refused to plead guilty.

And at trial, she planned to make Elena the center of her defense.
