Chapter 10 - THE DEBT OF THE FATHERS

Caleb Mercer had died before Elena was born.

That was the first thing Arthur told her.

The second thing was worse.

“He was innocent.”

Elena stared across the library table.

Jonathan stopped pacing.

Reed remained near the door.

Arthur held the old photograph in both hands.

“My father and Caleb built the original Whitmore investment company together.”

“They started with one warehouse.”

“Then three.”

“Then hotels.”

“Then commercial real estate.”

Elena listened without blinking.

“Where did Evelyn fit?”

“She was the financial genius.”

“Michael inherited her ability with numbers.”

Arthur swallowed.

“When the company nearly collapsed during a bad expansion, my father secretly borrowed from client reserve accounts.”

“That was illegal.”

“Yes.”

“Caleb discovered it.”

“He threatened to report him.”

“So your father blamed Caleb.”

Arthur nodded.

“He altered the books.”

“He testified against him.”

“And you?”

Arthur looked down.

“I was twenty-seven.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I believed my father.”

“Did you testify?”

“Yes.”

Elena recoiled.

Arthur’s voice broke.

“My testimony helped convict Caleb.”

Elena stood.

“My grandfather.”

“I didn’t know he was your grandfather when you married Michael.”

“When did you find out?”

Arthur looked ashamed.

“Three years ago.”

Elena laughed once in disbelief.

“Three years.”

“Michael discovered it while researching family history.”

“He confronted me.”

“You both knew?”

“Yes.”

“And neither of you told me?”

“Michael wanted to.”

“I asked him to wait.”

Elena stared at him.

“You asked my husband to hide the fact that your family destroyed mine?”

Arthur had no defense.

She walked toward the shelves because she needed distance.

Her hands shook.

Her father had rarely spoken about his childhood.

He said only that his own father died with a ruined name.

Elena had assumed it was old family shame.

Now she understood.

The Whitmores were the shame.

Jonathan looked stunned.

“Grandfather framed someone?”

Arthur nodded.

“And Evelyn knew?”

“I believe she discovered the truth years later.”

“That’s why she left.”

“Yes.”

“She confronted Father.”

“He threatened to destroy her too.”

Jonathan sat down heavily.

“So Victoria was right.”

Arthur looked at him.

“About what?”

“The person at the dinner table.”

“Evelyn.”

Elena turned.

“No.”

They all looked at her.

“That still doesn’t explain Victoria.”

Reed nodded.

“Mrs. Whitmore had direct involvement in the recent transfers.”

Elena continued.

“And the offshore company used my name.”

“If Evelyn wanted justice for Caleb Mercer, why frame his granddaughter?”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“Maybe she didn’t.”

Jonathan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Elena pointed at the offshore transfers.

“What if ELM Holdings wasn’t created to frame me originally?”

Reed leaned forward.

“Explain.”

“My full name is Elena Louise Mercer.”

“ELM.”

“But Evelyn’s full name?”

Arthur answered.

“Evelyn Lorraine Whitmore.”

Elena looked at him.

“What was her married name?”

Arthur’s eyes widened.

“She married Robert Maddox.”

Evelyn Lorraine Maddox.

E.L.M.

The room fell silent.

Jonathan whispered.

“ELM Holdings could refer to Evelyn.”

Reed immediately began typing on his phone.

Arthur stared at the documents.

“Victoria may have redirected suspicion toward Elena because the initials fit both women.”

Elena’s anger sharpened into clarity.

“She didn’t invent the company.”

“She hijacked it.”

Jonathan looked toward Reed.

“If Evelyn created ELM Holdings, why receive stolen Whitmore money?”

Arthur answered.

“To recover what she believed our father stole from Caleb.”

Elena shook her head.

“Twenty-eight million dollars isn’t justice.”

“No.”

Arthur looked exhausted.

“It’s revenge.”

Reed’s phone rang.

He answered.

After several seconds, he looked up.

“We found the account history.”

Everyone waited.

“ELM Holdings existed for nine years.”

Elena frowned.

“That’s long before Michael died.”

“Yes.”

“And for most of that period, it received no Whitmore funds.”

Reed continued.

“Then eleven months ago, someone changed the authorized account manager.”

“Who?”

Reed looked at Arthur.

“Victoria Whitmore.”

Arthur’s face went cold.

“So Evelyn created the company.”

“And Victoria took control of it.”

Reed nodded.

“It appears that way.”

Jonathan stood.

“Then find Evelyn.”

Reed’s expression became grim.

“We already did.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Reed looked directly at Elena.

“St. Matthew’s Hospital.”

“She was admitted forty minutes ago.”

Elena felt dread before he finished.

“What happened?”

“Her car went off a bridge.”

Arthur whispered.

“Victoria.”

Reed shook his head.

“There were two women in the car.”

“One was Evelyn.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

“And the other?”

Reed looked at Arthur.

May you like

“We don’t know.”

“The passenger disappeared before emergency crews arrived.”
