Chapter 7 - WHAT VANESSA KNEW

Vanessa requested to meet me alone.

Rebecca said absolutely not.

So we met in Rebecca’s conference room.

Vanessa arrived wearing jeans, a cream sweater, and no visible makeup.

She looked younger without the emerald dress.

More tired too.

She sat across from me.

“I moved out.”

“From my house?”

“I never moved in.”

“Where were you staying?”

“A hotel.”

I said nothing.

Vanessa folded her hands.

“Ryan lied to me.”

“I know.”

“I am not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

She flinched.

I did not apologize.

“I knew he was married.”

“Yes.”

“I believed him when he said it was over.”

“You still walked into my dining room.”

“Yes.”

Her honesty disarmed me more than excuses would have.

She reached into her bag and removed a flash drive.

“This is why I asked to meet.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“What is on it?”

“Copies of messages.”

“Between you and Ryan?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Two years.”

I stared at her.

“Two years?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“He first contacted me at a conference.”

I thought back.

I had been home with Sophie, who had pneumonia.

Ryan had extended his trip by one night.

Of course.

Vanessa pushed the drive toward Rebecca.

“There are also documents.”

“What documents?”

“Ryan asked me to hold some files for him.”

My heartbeat changed.

Rebecca did not touch the drive yet.

“What kind?”

“Financial.”

“What exactly?”

“I did not understand them at first.”

“Do you now?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Some.”

She explained that Ryan had opened Bennett Strategic Consulting eighteen months earlier.

He told her it was a tax-management entity.

Then he began transferring money into accounts associated with consulting invoices.

Some invoices were legitimate.

Others were not.

The destination accounts were linked to a holding company.

A holding company with Vanessa listed as a minority member.

I stared at her.

“You own part of it?”

“On paper.”

“Did you sign?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca’s voice became sharp.

“Did you receive money?”

“Not personally.”

“Did you know marital assets were being transferred?”

“Not until recently.”

“How recently?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Before the dinner.

“Why did you still come to my house?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because Ryan told me he was about to end everything.”

“You believed him again.”

“Yes.”

I sat back.

Something unexpected happened.

I stopped seeing Vanessa as the central villain.

She had betrayed another woman.

That remained true.

But Ryan had used her too.

Different lies.

Different incentives.

Same system.

Rebecca inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.

Folders appeared.

Messages.

PDFs.

Bank exports.

Photographs.

Then one document.

PROJECT HARBOR.

Rebecca opened it.

A spreadsheet appeared.

Assets.

Real estate.

Investment accounts.

Business distributions.

Estimated values.

Next to several items were dates and transfer plans.

One column was labeled POST-SEPARATION POSITION.

My skin went cold.

There were projections showing how much Ryan would retain under different settlement scenarios.

Then another tab.

CUSTODY LEVERAGE.

I stopped breathing for a second.

The tab contained notes.

Primary residence.

School continuity.

Maternal employment gap.

Prenatal mental health.

Financial dependency.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you see this?”

“Yesterday.”

Rebecca scrolled farther.

At the bottom was a sentence written in Ryan’s own notes.

If Claire believes she could lose the children, she will accept almost anything.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Rebecca.

My hands slowly curled into fists.

Ryan had spent years telling me family was everything.

May you like

Apparently, he had been telling the truth.

He simply meant it was the best weapon available.
