Chapter 4 - VANESSA CALLS FIRST

“Why are you calling me?”

I kept my voice even.

Vanessa exhaled.

“Because Ryan is furious.”

“That sounds like Ryan’s problem.”

“He says you took the children.”

“They are with their mother.”

“He says you are trying to punish him.”

I looked at Rebecca.

She shook her head slowly, signaling me not to argue.

“So why are you calling?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I do not want this to become destructive.”

“You moved into my home.”

“I did not move in.”

“You were told you were moving in.”

“That was Ryan’s plan.”

Interesting.

Not our plan.

Ryan’s plan.

I repeated it.

“Ryan’s plan?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, “I thought you already knew about us.”

I almost laughed.

“Did Ryan tell you that?”

“He said the marriage had been over for years.”

“Was he still sleeping in my bedroom when he told you that?”

Rebecca covered her mouth to hide a smile.

Vanessa did not answer.

I continued.

“Was I still pregnant with his child?”

“That is not fair.”

“No, Vanessa.”

My voice remained calm.

“What happened in my dining room was not fair.”

I heard movement on her end.

A door closing.

Then she lowered her voice.

“He said you refused to accept the marriage was finished.”

“When did I supposedly refuse?”

“Claire—”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“I was trying to get pregnant last year.”

Silence.

The baby shifted beneath my ribs.

Ryan and I had tried for this pregnancy.

We had used ovulation kits.

We had discussed names.

He had rubbed my stomach after the positive test and cried.

While apparently telling Vanessa our marriage had been dead.

Vanessa spoke more quietly.

“I did not know that.”

Something in her voice changed.

Not guilt exactly.

Uncertainty.

Ryan had built different versions of reality for different women.

“What else did he tell you?”

Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

Then she said, “He told me you had serious anxiety.”

There it was.

“And?”

“That you checked his phone constantly.”

I had checked his phone once.

After finding a hotel receipt.

“And?”

“That you were controlling about the children.”

I looked toward the office door where Ethan and Sophie sat outside.

“And?”

“That his mother was worried about you.”

Margaret.

Again.

I looked at Rebecca.

Her expression had hardened.

Vanessa continued.

“He said this pregnancy made things worse.”

My fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.

“Did Ryan ever tell you he planned to seek custody?”

Another silence.

Then Vanessa said, “He said if you made the divorce difficult, he might have to.”

Rebecca immediately wrote something.

My heartbeat quickened.

“When did he say that?”

“A few weeks ago.”

“Before I filed?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

It mattered enormously.

Ryan had discussed using custody as leverage before I ever left.

“Did he say why?”

“He said you would become unreasonable once you realized you would not get the financial settlement you expected.”

Rebecca pointed toward the recorder.

It was running.

I continued carefully.

“What financial settlement did he expect?”

“I do not know.”

“Vanessa.”

“I really do not know.”

I heard genuine frustration.

Then she added, “He said most of the money was protected.”

Everything inside me went still.

“How?”

“I do not know.”

“Did he mention Bennett Strategic Consulting?”

Nothing.

Then a small breath.

Rebecca heard it too.

Vanessa had recognized the name.

“I need to go.”

“Vanessa.”

She disconnected.

Rebecca stared at my phone.

“She knows.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe not everything.”

“But something.”

Rebecca stood.

“I am filing for expedited financial discovery.”

I slowly closed my laptop.

Ryan believed his most dangerous problem was that I had left.

May you like

He was wrong.

His most dangerous problem was that I had started asking questions.
