Chapter 8 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Andrew filed for divorce the next morning.
He did not call me first.
He sent the petition through a lawyer.
Adultery was not mentioned.
The assault was not mentioned.
Instead, Andrew accused me of financial manipulation, coercive control, and secretly interfering in his business relationships.
I read the filing over coffee.
Victor watched me carefully.
“Are you all right?”
“I’m fascinated.”
“By what?”
“He is accusing me of hiding financial control over assets he repeatedly claimed were his.”
Victor almost smiled.
“It is a bold theory.”
“It is a stupid theory.”
“That too.”
Andrew’s lawyers also demanded immediate release of all personal accounts.
That request was expected.
What was not expected came two hours later.
A business reporter called our communications office asking whether I had embezzled funds from Whitmore Dynamics.
Someone had leaked the allegation.
By noon, three financial blogs had repeated it.
By one, my photograph was everywhere.
Some headlines described me as the secretive wife behind the Whitmore financial crisis.
Others called me an heiress.
A few used words like revenge and marriage war.
My father wanted to issue a public statement immediately.
I refused.
“Why?”
“Because Andrew wants me emotional.”
“He already has half the city talking.”
“Let them.”
My father frowned.
I slid another document toward him.
The independent accountants had completed a preliminary review of Red Birch.
Not only had two million dollars gone to Brenda’s company.
Another 1.3 million had moved through an advertising vendor into North Vale-controlled accounts.
The approvals carried Andrew’s electronic authorization.
That was not gossip.
That was evidence.
At three, Andrew held an impromptu press appearance outside his attorney’s office.
I watched the video from headquarters.
He wore a dark suit.
No tie.
Carefully exhausted.
He told reporters he loved his wife.
Then he told them he feared I was having an emotional breakdown.
My father swore under his breath.
Andrew continued.
“My only goal is to protect our employees, our family, and the company I spent my life building.”
I felt something inside me finally detach.
Not break.
Detach.
He had hit me.
Cheated on me.
Used company money to support his mistress.
And now he was turning concern into another weapon.
A reporter asked whether he had struck me.
Andrew paused.
“My attorney has advised me not to discuss private allegations.”
Not a denial.
Victor looked at me.
“We should respond.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“With the audit?”
“Part of it.”
“What else?”
I touched the bruise on my cheek.
“The truth.”
At seven p.m., Escalante Capital released a statement.
It confirmed that I had been a controlling financial stakeholder in Whitmore Dynamics for four years.
It confirmed that my investment entities had provided the capital that prevented the company’s collapse.
It confirmed that an independent review had identified unauthorized related-party transfers.
Then came the sentence Andrew had not expected.
Mrs. Mariana Escalante is cooperating with law enforcement regarding an alleged physical assault and related events occurring at the Hollow Creek estate.
Within twenty minutes, Andrew called me fourteen times.
I ignored every call.
Then a message appeared.
You are destroying everything.
I stared at it.
My reply contained five words.
May you like
No, Andrew.
I stopped saving it.
