Chapter 15 - THE LETTER TO MARIANA

The envelope contained a letter.
Not from Brenda.
From Andrew.
It was dated five months earlier.
Brenda had kept it.
Perhaps as insurance.
Perhaps because she never trusted him either.
The first line made my stomach turn.
Brenda,
Mariana still believes I know nothing about her preferred holdings.
I kept reading.
If we force an ugly separation, she will retreat to protect her father and avoid publicity.
She has always valued privacy more than money.
Once she withdraws from board involvement, we proceed.
I stopped.
My hands were shaking.
Not because I was surprised anymore.
Because Andrew knew me so well.
He knew I hated public conflict.
He knew I spent my life solving problems quietly.
He knew I protected people I loved even when they disappointed me.
And he had turned those qualities into weaknesses on a page.
The letter continued.
Margaret can create enough social pressure.
The theft angle may work if handled carefully, but do not do anything criminal.
I stared at that sentence.
Do not do anything criminal.
As though planning to destroy my credibility became acceptable if they stayed on the correct side of a statute.
Brenda had not stayed there.
She stole the necklace.
She forged documents.
She created false evidence.
But Andrew had given the plan permission to exist.
The final paragraph was worse.
After closing, Mariana will receive a generous settlement.
She will be angry, but she will recover.
She always does.
I lowered the letter.
She always does.
For four years, Andrew had watched me recover from every crisis.
His business failures.
His mother’s debts.
Lost investors.
Broken contracts.
He had mistaken resilience for immunity.
He believed he could wound me because I would survive.
The detective asked whether I wanted a copy entered through my attorney.
“Yes.”
My father stood beside the window when I returned to the office.
I handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then he placed it on the table with extraordinary care.
“I want to ruin him.”
“I know.”
“I could.”
“I know.”
My father looked at me.
“You are going to stop me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want him destroyed by power.”
I picked up the letter.
“I want him destroyed by truth.”
That evening, Margaret issued her statement.
She admitted publicly that she had wrongly accused me of stealing the emerald necklace.
She confirmed the necklace had been recovered from property associated with Brenda.
Then she did something I had not requested.
She admitted she had encouraged Andrew to leave me.
She admitted she had participated in humiliating me.
And she said she was ashamed.
The statement spread everywhere.
For the first time, the story was no longer about a mysterious heiress freezing her husband’s money.
It was about what had happened inside that foyer.
By midnight, the video surfaced.
One of the guests had recorded part of the argument on a phone.
Andrew’s voice was clear.
“Kneel.”
“Confess you stole the necklace.”
“Then crawl out of my house.”
Then my voice.
“This mansion…”
“Your company…”
“The luxury cars…”
“The private accounts…”
“The fortune you worship…”
“…exists because of me.”
The clip ended with laughter.
Their laughter.
May you like
Millions of people heard it.
By morning, nobody was laughing anymore.
