Chapter 16 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

Richard looked shocked.

For the first time, he understood that Eric had never been loyal to him.

“Put it down,” Richard whispered.

Eric laughed.

“Your father paid for loyalty.”

“Richard, move when I tell you,” I said.

Eric looked at me.

“There he is.”

“Who?”

“Shepherd.”

“No.”

I kept my hands visible.

“Just a father who is tired of burying people.”

Eric’s smile vanished.

Federal agents remained behind cover.

Nobody fired.

Richard stood between us.

A shield.

A hostage.

A man who had spent years hurting someone weaker and now discovered what helplessness felt like.

“You know what Charles told me after Eleanor died?” Eric asked.

I waited.

“He said grief had made you harmless.”

“Maybe.”

“But then Lily called.”

His eyes moved toward the lights.

“One phone call brought the old world back.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“One phone call ended yours.”

Eric’s hand tightened around Richard.

Richard panicked.

“Eric, my father will pay you.”

“Your father is finished.”

“My mother has money.”

“Frozen.”

“I can get more.”

Eric looked disgusted.

“You really are Charles’s son.”

Richard suddenly drove his elbow backward.

Eric fired.

The bullet hit Richard in the side.

Richard collapsed.

I moved instinctively.

Eric raised the gun toward me.

Federal agents fired.

One round struck Eric’s shoulder.

Another hit his leg.

He fell.

His weapon skidded across the pavement.

Ruiz’s team rushed in.

I went to Richard.

Blood spread across his shirt.

His eyes were wide.

“Help me.”

For one second, neither of us spoke.

This was the man who had strangled my daughter.

Threatened her.

Broken her ribs.

Helped steal her mother’s property.

Yet I pressed my hand against the wound.

“Medic.”

Richard stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because Lily deserves a trial.”

His eyes closed.

Paramedics moved him away.

Eric lay twenty feet from us in handcuffs.

He laughed weakly.

“You still think courts fix things?”

I stood.

“No.”

“What fixes it?”

“Truth that survives people like you.”

He looked at me with hatred.

“You were better before.”

“Maybe.”

I turned away.

“But Lily deserves better than who I was.”

Richard survived surgery.

Eric survived too.

Within forty-eight hours, federal prosecutors unsealed indictments.

Charles Hale.

Richard Hale.

Eric Vance.

Samuel Price.

Chief Nolan.

Dr. Keller.

Nine additional defendants.

The charges covered corruption, kidnapping, obstruction, fraud, witness intimidation, conspiracy, and multiple violent offenses.

State prosecutors added charges connected to Lily.

For the first time, Richard would face a courtroom his family did not control.

But the case was not finished.

Chief Nolan finally gave investigators the location of two buried safes.

Inside were payment records.

Blackmail files.

Photographs used to control judges and officials.

And a notebook written by Charles.

One entry contained my name.

THOMAS CARTER - LEAVE ALONE UNLESS ACTIVATED.

Below it was another.

ELEANOR CARTER - PROBLEM.

And below that.

LILY CARTER - ACCESS POINT.

I gave the notebook to my daughter.

She read the entries.

Then she closed it.

“They turned our family into a plan.”

“Yes.”

May you like

She looked toward the courtroom documents.

“Now they can watch the plan fail.”
