Chapter 12 - THE LEAK INSIDE

Samuel Price had supervised federal anti-corruption operations across three states.

He had thirty-one years of service.

Awards.

Commendations.

A photograph with two presidents.

And according to Eleanor’s evidence, he had been meeting Eric Vance secretly for nearly a decade.

Jack did not confront him.

Not immediately.

Instead, he created a false operation.

Only Price received the location.

A supposed transfer of Sarah Bell to a different safe house.

The address was empty.

At 9:15 that evening, two armed men arrived.

Federal agents arrested both.

One carried a photograph of Sarah.

The other carried instructions.

Price was arrested at his office less than an hour later.

He denied everything.

Then one of the armed men identified him.

After that, Price requested a lawyer.

The leak was closed.

For the first time, Jack allowed himself to smile.

“We finally have clean walls.”

I understood what he meant.

For months, every federal move had reached Charles.

Now it did not.

That advantage lasted eleven hours.

Then Margaret Hale was found unconscious inside her home.

The house had been searched.

Her husband was gone.

So was Richard.

When she woke in the hospital, Margaret refused federal questioning.

Until Lily arrived.

I did not want her to go.

She insisted.

“I need to hear her say it.”

Ruiz escorted us.

Margaret looked smaller without the estate around her.

No pearls.

No makeup.

No audience.

Just an elderly woman with a bruise near her temple.

She looked at Lily.

“You destroyed this family.”

Lily sat across from her.

“No.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“You always were dramatic.”

Lily did not react.

“Richard hit me.”

“You provoked him.”

My hands clenched.

Lily remained calm.

“He strangled me.”

Margaret looked away.

“You stayed.”

There it was.

The cruelty people used when they needed the victim to carry the shame.

Lily leaned forward.

“I stayed because he threatened my father.”

Margaret’s face shifted.

“He threatened my friends.”

Silence.

“He controlled my bank accounts.”

Margaret stared at the blanket.

“He stole my mother’s house.”

No answer.

“And you knew.”

Margaret finally looked up.

“Marriage requires sacrifice.”

Lily nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Then she stood.

“I sacrificed enough.”

She walked toward the door.

Margaret broke.

“Wait.”

Lily stopped.

“Charles took Richard.”

I turned.

“What?”

Margaret began crying.

“He said Richard was becoming unstable.”

“Where did they go?”

“I don’t know.”

Ruiz moved closer.

“Mrs. Hale, think carefully.”

Margaret hesitated.

Then she whispered, “The quarry.”

Old Hale Quarry had closed nine years earlier.

Charles still owned the land.

Federal agents mobilized instantly.

Margaret grabbed Lily’s wrist.

Lily flinched.

I nearly moved.

Then Margaret said, “Richard still loves you.”

Lily gently removed her hand.

“No.”

Her voice was almost peaceful.

“He loves control.”

We left.

The quarry was surrounded before sunset.

Drones found a vehicle near an abandoned processing building.

Richard’s car.

Inside the building, agents found blood.

A broken phone.

Two shell casings.

And Charles Hale.

Alive.

Shot through the shoulder.

Richard was gone.

Charles looked at Ruiz.

Then at me.

“My son has lost his mind.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

Charles grimaced.

“He’s coming for Lily.”

“You taught him that.”

May you like

For the first time, Charles looked afraid.

“He’s coming for all of us.”
