Chapter 18 - THE LAST CONFESSION

The recording began with Vittorio coughing.

His voice sounded older than I expected.

Tired.

“My name is Vittorio Alessandro Vitali.”

“If Gabriel Ross is playing this recording, then I failed.”

Alessandro stared at the speaker.

I held his hand.

Vittorio explained that he had discovered Matteo’s theft years earlier.

He hired Thomas Shaw because he needed someone outside the family.

Thomas found more than theft.

He found bribery.

Insurance fraud.

Illegal surveillance.

And evidence that Matteo had already arranged the deaths of two whistleblowers.

Vittorio planned to go to federal authorities.

Then Matteo threatened Alessandro.

Not with money.

With death.

Vittorio panicked.

He delayed.

He tried to move assets and protect his son first.

That delay gave Matteo time.

Vittorio’s voice broke on the recording.

“I chose blood before truth.”

“I told myself it was because I was a father.”

“But fear does not become noble merely because a father feels it.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

Vittorio continued.

“If Thomas Shaw is still alive, he will finish what I was too weak to finish.”

“If he is dead, then his daughter must never be blamed for my cowardice.”

My breath caught.

Vittorio knew about me.

“I met Elizabeth once.”

“She was sixteen.”

“She brought her father lunch and complained about chemistry homework.”

I suddenly remembered.

A man in a dark coat had been sitting in my father’s office.

He had given me twenty dollars to buy dessert for everyone.

Vittorio.

I had forgotten his face.

The recording continued.

“Alessandro, if you hear this, I am sorry.”

“I taught you that family came first.”

“I was wrong.”

“Truth must come first, or family becomes merely another excuse for evil.”

Alessandro lowered his head.

The recording ended.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Alessandro cried.

Silently.

He covered his face with one hand.

I sat beside him.

I did not tell him his father had been good.

Vittorio had failed.

People died partly because of that failure.

But I also did not tell Alessandro his father had been a monster.

Human beings could be cowardly and loving at the same time.

That complexity was harder to accept than hatred.

Three weeks later, Matteo and Daniel Vitali were indicted on federal charges connected to financial crimes, conspiracy, obstruction, kidnapping, and multiple deaths under renewed investigation.

North Shore Medical Consulting’s director agreed to cooperate.

Records showed Patrick Carter had been deliberately given a drug that triggered fatal cardiac complications.

Liam finally had proof.

My parents’ crash investigation was reopened.

The state corrected the file.

Elizabeth Shaw was officially listed as a survivor.

For the first time in seven years, I went to my parents’ graves under my real name.

Liam came with me.

Alessandro stood several yards away.

He did not intrude.

I touched my mother’s headstone.

“I’m sorry it took so long.”

Wind moved through the cemetery trees.

I placed my father’s letter beside the flowers.

“You told me not to seek revenge.”

“I didn’t.”

“We found the truth.”

Behind me, Liam whispered.

“They’d be proud.”

I looked at him.

“Your dad too.”

He nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

I expected another reporter.

Instead, it was my nursing school.

My stomach tightened.

I answered.

The dean spoke for less than three minutes.

When the call ended, Alessandro walked closer.

“What happened?”

I looked at him.

“They’re not expelling me.”

His expression changed.

“They reviewed everything.”

“They’re allowing me to return next semester under my legal name.”

Liam smiled.

Alessandro did too.

It was one of the rare times his smile reached his eyes.

Then he asked the question that frightened me more than any threat Matteo had made.

“What happens now?”

I looked at Chicago beyond the cemetery gates.

For seven years, every major decision had been about survival.

Now I actually had to choose a life.
