Chapter 6 - THE SECRET HARRISON KEPT

Elena listened to Rebecca’s statement from her hospital bed.

She did not interrupt once.

Matteo stood beside the window.

Vivian Vance had also been invited at Elena’s request.

She sat in a chair near the door, looking smaller than Elena had ever seen her.

Rebecca appeared on the tablet through an encrypted video call.

“Harrison ordered the background investigation after Julian became serious about you.”

Elena frowned.

“I remember.”

“He told Julian the report found nothing unusual.”

“That’s what Julian told me.”

Rebecca nodded.

“That wasn’t true.”

She opened a scanned document.

A private investigator’s report appeared.

ELENA MERCER.

FORMERLY ELENA SOFIA DELUCA.

BIOLOGICAL SIBLING: MATTEO ANGELO DELUCA.

Elena closed her eyes.

Matteo cursed quietly.

Vivian stared at the report.

“I never saw that.”

Rebecca continued.

“Harrison removed it from the family file.”

“Why?” Elena asked.

Rebecca hesitated.

“Because he saw an opportunity.”

Matteo turned.

“What opportunity?”

“Harrison believed your connection to Matteo could eventually protect Vance assets if there were financial problems.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“He wanted me to marry Julian because of Matteo?”

“Not exactly.”

“Julian already wanted to marry you.”

“Harrison decided not to interfere because he believed your family connection could become useful.”

Matteo laughed bitterly.

“He planned to use Elena to reach me.”

Rebecca nodded.

“But after the wedding, Elena never mentioned you.”

“Harrison waited.”

“He assumed she would eventually introduce the families.”

“She didn’t.”

Elena’s voice was quiet.

“I deliberately kept you away.”

Matteo looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Harrison did exactly what I was afraid someone would do.”

Rebecca continued.

“When Vance Medical started failing eighteen months ago, Harrison wanted Julian to ask Elena about her brother.”

“Julian didn’t know.”

“So Harrison had a problem.”

“He couldn’t explain how he knew without admitting he had hidden the report.”

Matteo understood.

“So he tried to force Elena into a position where she would reveal me herself.”

“Yes.”

Elena felt sick.

The insults.

The pressure.

The constant comments about her having no family.

The deliberate humiliation whenever she talked about foster care.

Had some of it been designed to provoke her into finally saying the words Julian never knew?

My brother is Matteo DeLuca.

Vivian suddenly stood.

“Harrison knew.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She stared at the report.

“He knew before the wedding.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.”

Vivian’s eyes filled with fury.

“My husband spent years calling Elena an orphan.”

“He let people mock her for having no family.”

“He knew she had a brother.”

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

Vivian turned toward Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena did not respond.

Vivian continued.

“I knew Julian could be cruel.”

The admission shocked Elena more than anything else.

Vivian’s shoulders sagged.

“I told myself it was stress.”

“I told myself you argued like every married couple.”

“I saw bruises once.”

Elena looked at her.

“When?”

“Thanksgiving.”

Elena remembered.

She had worn long sleeves.

Julian had grabbed her wrist during an argument the night before.

“You saw them?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

Vivian began crying.

“I asked Julian.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That you bruised easily.”

“And you believed him?”

Vivian looked down.

“I chose to.”

Elena nodded slowly.

“That’s different.”

Vivian covered her mouth.

“I know.”

For years Elena had imagined what it would feel like to hear someone from Julian’s family admit the truth.

It did not feel triumphant.

It felt exhausting.

Matteo’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

“Adrian.”

He answered.

“Yes.”

His eyes hardened.

“Good.”

He ended the call.

“They stopped the Vance plane.”

Elena looked toward him.

“Charles?”

“On board.”

“Police found him?”

“Yes.”

“With three laptops.”

Matteo almost smiled.

“And a suitcase containing four hundred thousand dollars in cash.”

Vivian sat heavily.

“Oh, Harrison.”

Elena looked at her.

“Did you know about the money?”

“No.”

“I swear.”

Matteo studied Vivian.

“Where is your husband?”

“At our house.”

“Police?”

“His lawyers told him not to leave.”

Matteo looked toward Elena.

“Harrison requested a meeting.”

“No.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Elena sat straighter.

“No more private meetings.”

“No more rooms where Harrison controls what happens.”

“If he wants to speak, he speaks in front of lawyers.”

“Police if necessary.”

“And a recorder.”

Matteo nodded.

“Done.”

That afternoon, Harrison Vance entered a hospital conference room accompanied by two attorneys.

Matteo sat across from him.

Adrian sat beside Matteo.

Elena appeared on a video monitor from her hospital room.

Vivian sat behind the attorneys.

Harrison looked at his wife.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Vivian’s expression hardened.

“That sentence stopped working last night.”

Harrison ignored her.

He looked at Matteo.

“Mr. DeLuca.”

Matteo said nothing.

Harrison tried again.

“I understand emotions are high.”

Matteo’s expression did not change.

Harrison looked toward Elena on the screen.

“I am sorry for what Julian did.”

Elena stared at him.

“That sounded expensive for you to say.”

Harrison’s jaw tightened.

“We need to separate Julian’s personal behavior from legitimate business matters.”

Matteo leaned back.

“No.”

Harrison frowned.

“The debt negotiations involve thousands of employees.”

“They also involve fraudulent collateral statements.”

“That is an allegation.”

“Your nephew was caught trying to leave the country with four hundred thousand dollars and three corporate laptops.”

Harrison’s face twitched.

“I cannot control Charles.”

Adrian slid a document forward.

“But apparently you can pay him.”

Harrison looked down.

A transfer showed two hundred fifty thousand dollars sent to a company controlled by Charles six hours before the gala.

Harrison pushed it away.

“Consulting.”

Elena almost laughed.

Matteo’s voice remained steady.

“You forged my sister’s signatures.”

“I did no such thing.”

Rebecca’s recorded voice suddenly played from a speaker.

Then Harrison’s own voice filled the room.

Use one from the archive.

Harrison froze.

Matteo stopped the recording.

“Would you like to revise that answer?”

Harrison looked toward his attorneys.

Neither spoke.

Elena watched the man who had intimidated her for nearly eight years.

For the first time, Harrison Vance looked uncertain.

Then he looked at her.

“You could stop this.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

Elena spoke first.

“How?”

“Talk to your brother.”

“Ask him for an extension.”

“Give us six months.”

“You can preserve the company.”

Elena stared.

Even now.

After the forgery.

After Julian.

After the charity money.

Harrison still believed she existed to protect his family.

“What happens to the stolen foundation money?”

“We replace it.”

“With what?”

“Future revenues.”

“What happens to my forged documents?”

“Our attorneys correct the record.”

“What happens to Julian?”

Harrison paused.

“That is a family matter.”

Elena smiled sadly.

“No.”

“That is your problem.”

Harrison’s expression darkened.

“Elena.”

“My name is Mrs. Vance.”

“Not for much longer.”

His face changed.

Vivian looked toward Elena.

Matteo remained silent.

Elena continued.

“You knew who my brother was before I married Julian.”

Harrison stared at her.

“You hid it.”

“You spent years watching your family treat me like I should be grateful they allowed a foster child into their home.”

“You let Julian believe I had nowhere to go.”

“Why?”

Harrison’s answer came after a long silence.

“Because families like mine survive by understanding leverage.”

Matteo’s expression became dangerous.

Elena stopped him with a look.

She wanted Harrison to keep talking.

“So I was leverage.”

“At first, potential leverage.”

“And my baby?”

Harrison said nothing.

Elena’s eyes hardened.

“Was my son leverage too?”

The old man finally looked uncomfortable.

“The shareholder structure is complicated.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Elena.”

“My son.”

“Was he part of your financial plan?”

Harrison exhaled.

“He would have stabilized certain ownership provisions.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

Elena felt tears burning behind hers.

“Seven months.”

“What?”

“I have spent seven months talking to him.”

“Reading to him.”

Feeling him move.”

“Planning his room.”

“And you talk about him like a clause in a contract.”

Harrison looked impatient.

“You are being emotional.”

The room became completely silent.

Elena stared at him.

Then she smiled.

For once, that phrase no longer had power.

“Yes.”

“I am.”

“I am angry.”

“I am disgusted.”

“I am heartbroken.”

“And every one of those emotions belongs to me.”

“You don’t get to diagnose them.”

“You don’t get to forge them away.”

“You don’t get to put your son in charge of them.”

Harrison leaned forward.

“If you let Matteo foreclose, you will destroy your husband’s family.”

Elena answered immediately.

“No.”

“You did that.”

Harrison looked toward Matteo.

“You really intend to take everything?”

Matteo folded his hands.

“Not everything.”

A flicker of hope appeared in Harrison’s face.

Matteo continued.

“We’re preserving payroll.”

“Hospital operations.”

“Employee retirement obligations.”

“Patient programs.”

“And the children’s foundation.”

Harrison’s hope vanished.

“What are you taking?”

“Your family’s controlling shares.”

“Corporate aircraft.”

“Pledged real estate.”

“Investment properties.”

“Executive compensation accounts subject to the loan agreements.”

“And every asset legally attached to the defaulted notes.”

Harrison stood.

“That is everything.”

Matteo looked at Elena.

“No.”

“Your employees are keeping the things that matter.”

Harrison’s face became red.

“You bastard.”

Matteo almost smiled.

Elena spoke.

“Harrison.”

He looked toward the monitor.

“You spent my entire marriage believing I was the powerless person in the room.”

She rested one hand over her child.

“You were wrong.”

Harrison stared at her.

Elena continued.

“And tomorrow, I’m resigning from every Vance board.”

“I’m turning over every document I have.”

“I’m filing for divorce.”

“And I’m asking the court to void every instrument carrying a forged version of my signature.”

Harrison’s shoulders dropped.

For the first time, defeat entered his face.

Then Adrian’s phone vibrated.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

“Matteo.”

“What?”

Adrian looked directly at Harrison.

“The forensic team found where the charity money went.”

Harrison became very still.

Matteo noticed.

“Where?”

Adrian turned his laptop.

“Not into company operations.”

Elena frowned.

“Then where?”

Adrian answered.

“A private account in Switzerland.”

The room went silent.

“And the account is not in Julian’s name.”

May you like

He looked at Harrison.

“It’s his.”
