Chapter 1 - FORTY MEN IN BLACK

The first black SUV stopped directly beneath the hospital’s glowing entrance.

Then another rolled in behind it.

Then another.

Within seconds, the entire circular driveway outside Dallas Memorial Hospital was filled with matte-black vehicles.

The valet attendants stopped moving.

Two hospital security officers exchanged nervous looks.

Inside the atrium, Elena Vance remained on the marble floor with one hand pressed to her bleeding temple and the other wrapped around the curve of her stomach.

Julian did not notice the convoy at first.

He was too busy pointing angrily at the Chief of Staff.

“I said get her out of here.”

Dr. Malcolm Hayes finally found his voice.

“Mr. Vance, your wife is pregnant and has sustained a head injury.”

Julian stepped closer.

“My family donated the cardiovascular wing.”

“You work in a building with my name on half the plaques.”

“You will do what I tell you.”

Elena raised her head slightly.

Something cold passed through her expression.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Outside, the passenger doors of the SUVs opened simultaneously.

Men emerged one after another.

Some wore tailored black suits.

Others wore dark jackets over fitted shirts.

Tattoos disappeared beneath their cuffs and climbed above their collars.

They did not shout.

They did not rush.

Their silence was considerably more frightening.

One man opened the rear door of the center SUV.

A tall figure stepped onto the pavement.

Matteo DeLuca was forty-one years old.

He wore a charcoal suit with no tie, a black overcoat, and an expression so controlled that even the hospital security officers instinctively straightened.

Dallas newspapers called him a private investment magnate.

Federal investigators had called him many other things.

Business magazines wrote carefully worded profiles about the empire he controlled through logistics firms, real estate companies, security corporations, construction holdings, and an international private-equity network.

People who knew the darker side of Dallas called him something simpler.

The King of South Dallas.

Matteo ignored everyone waiting to greet him.

His eyes had already found Elena through the glass.

He stopped walking.

One of his attorneys nearly collided with him.

Matteo stared through the hospital doors at the woman kneeling beside the donor wall.

At the blood running down her face.

At the man standing over her.

Then he saw the curve of Elena’s stomach.

For the first time that evening, Matteo’s expression changed.

“Who touched her?”

No one answered.

He walked through the doors.

Forty men moved behind him.

The string quartet stopped playing.

The entire gala became silent.

Julian finally turned.

His face changed instantly.

Every trace of arrogance vanished.

“Harrison.”

Julian looked frantically toward his father.

Harrison Vance stood near the champagne fountain.

The seventy-year-old patriarch of Vance Medical Holdings suddenly looked as though he had aged another twenty years.

“That’s him,” Harrison whispered.

Julian swallowed.

“The creditor?”

His father nodded.

Matteo continued walking.

Guests instinctively stepped aside.

Board members who had spent weeks trying to secure a meeting with him lowered their glasses.

Matteo passed all of them without acknowledgment.

His gaze remained locked on Elena.

Elena was crying now.

Not because of the pain.

Not because of Julian.

Because the last time she had seen Matteo DeLuca in person, she had been seventeen years old.

She had been standing beside a bus station in San Antonio.

He had been twenty-two.

They had promised each other that someday they would never have to say goodbye again.

Life had broken that promise.

Until tonight.

Matteo stopped ten feet away.

Julian immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. DeLuca.”

“I’m Julian Vance.”

“My father is Harrison Vance.”

“We’ve been expecting you.”

Matteo did not even look at him.

He continued toward Elena.

Julian frowned.

“Mr. DeLuca?”

Matteo walked past him.

Then the man feared by half the city lowered himself onto one knee in the middle of the hospital atrium.

“Elena.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Matteo.”

He looked at the blood on her temple.

His jaw tightened.

“Look at me.”

Elena slowly raised her face.

Matteo saw the swelling already forming along her cheekbone.

He saw the finger-shaped marks on her upper arm.

Then he looked at her tightly cinched gown.

His eyes narrowed.

“What happened?”

Elena tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

Julian stepped behind him.

“She had an accident.”

Matteo slowly turned his head.

Julian forced a smile.

“She became emotional.”

“She stumbled into the wall.”

Matteo looked back at Elena.

“Did you stumble?”

Elena stared at Julian.

For years, she had learned to measure every word around her husband.

She had learned which answers produced slammed doors.

Which questions caused arguments.

Which silences kept the peace.

But something had changed when Matteo entered the room.

The lonely foster child Elena had spent her life pretending to leave behind suddenly understood that she did not have to be alone anymore.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Matteo leaned closer.

“What happened?”

Elena looked straight at Julian.

“He hit me.”

Several guests looked away.

Matteo stood.

Julian immediately lifted both hands.

“Now wait a minute.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“She’s emotional.”

“She exaggerates.”

Matteo turned fully toward him.

“You hit my sister.”

The silence became absolute.

Julian blinked.

“What?”

Harrison Vance dropped his champagne glass.

It shattered against the marble.

Elena closed her eyes.

There it was.

The secret she had hidden for almost fourteen years.

The secret she had protected even after marrying Julian.

The name she had deliberately removed from every background report his family had ordered.

The relationship she had concealed because she knew exactly what the Vances would do if they discovered who her brother was.

Julian stared at her.

“Your sister?”

Matteo stepped between them.

“My little sister.”

Julian looked from Matteo to Elena.

“That’s impossible.”

“Elena grew up in foster care.”

Matteo’s voice remained quiet.

“So did I.”

Harrison suddenly grabbed the edge of a nearby table.

His face had gone pale.

“You’re Elena DeLuca.”

Elena opened her eyes.

She had not heard that name spoken publicly in years.

“Yes.”

Harrison whispered something under his breath.

Julian turned on Elena.

“You lied to me.”

Matteo moved before Julian could take a single step toward her.

He did not strike him.

He simply placed himself between Julian and Elena.

The message was clear enough.

“You will not approach her.”

Julian pointed at Elena.

“She is my wife.”

Matteo looked at the police officer stationed near the gala entrance.

“Not a possession.”

Then Matteo turned toward Dr. Hayes.

“You are the Chief of Staff?”

“Yes.”

“I want an obstetrician.”

“A trauma physician.”

“A neurologist if necessary.”

“And I want every injury documented exactly as it appears right now.”

Julian’s face tightened.

“That won’t be necessary.”

Matteo ignored him.

“No makeup.”

“No private family physician.”

“No altered records.”

“No back-room treatment.”

“No one touches her medical chart except the physicians responsible for her care.”

Dr. Hayes nodded immediately.

“Understood.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You cannot come into my family’s hospital and issue orders.”

Matteo finally smiled.

It was not a pleasant smile.

“I can tonight.”

Harrison looked sick.

Matteo removed a folded document from inside his coat.

He handed it to Harrison.

The old man stared at the first page.

His hands began to shake.

Julian grabbed the document.

“What is this?”

Matteo answered calmly.

“Notice of controlling interest.”

Julian looked up.

“Controlling interest in what?”

“Your debt.”

Matteo glanced at Elena.

Then back at Julian.

“Every secured loan your family has spent six months trying to renegotiate.”

“Every commercial note tied to Vance Medical Holdings.”

“Every mortgage on your family’s corporate properties.”

“And the bridge loan your father secretly took against this hospital foundation’s development assets.”

Harrison whispered, “No.”

Matteo continued.

“My firm acquired all of them forty-eight hours ago.”

Julian stared at him.

“You’re Blackthorn.”

Matteo nodded.

Blackthorn Capital had been the name terrifying the Vance family for weeks.

A mysterious investment company had purchased nearly nine hundred million dollars of distressed Vance debt from three separate lenders.

Julian had spent every hour since trying to learn who controlled it.

Now he knew.

Matteo looked toward Elena.

“And after what I just witnessed, your extension meeting has been canceled.”

Harrison stepped forward.

“Mr. DeLuca, please.”

“We can discuss this privately.”

Matteo’s expression hardened.

“You had privacy.”

He pointed toward Elena.

“Apparently, this is what your family does with it.”

Two nurses arrived with a wheelchair.

Elena tried to stand.

Pain ripped across her lower abdomen.

She gasped.

Matteo turned instantly.

“Elena?”

Her fingers tightened around her stomach.

“I’m cramping.”

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Dr. Hayes rushed forward.

“Get her upstairs.”

Julian moved toward her.

“Elena, I’m coming with you.”

She recoiled.

Matteo noticed.

So did the doctor.

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Julian stopped.

“I’m your husband.”

“No.”

Her voice was stronger the second time.

“I don’t want you near me.”

Julian looked around at the watching crowd.

His humiliation quickly transformed into anger.

“Elena.”

She stared directly at him.

“You heard me.”

Matteo crouched beside the wheelchair.

“You want me with you?”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

For the first time in fourteen years, she reached for her brother’s hand.

Matteo took it.

The nurses began pushing her toward the elevators.

Matteo walked beside her.

His men remained behind.

So did three attorneys.

Harrison looked around in confusion.

“Why are they staying?”

Matteo’s lead attorney, Adrian Russo, opened his briefcase.

“Because we still have business.”

Julian stared after Elena.

Then toward the attorney.

“What business?”

Adrian placed a second stack of documents on the table.

“Preservation orders.”

“Corporate notices.”

“And a forensic audit authorization triggered by your default agreements.”

Harrison’s knees nearly buckled.

Julian looked confused.

Then frightened.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“You should probably call your accountants.”

“Why?”

Adrian glanced toward the elevators where Elena had disappeared.

“Because Mr. DeLuca came here expecting to discuss your debt.”

He looked back at Julian.

“Now he wants to know why nine million dollars disappeared from a children’s charity fund three weeks before your company defaulted.”

Julian stopped breathing.

May you like

Across the room, Harrison Vance slowly closed his eyes.

And for the first time that night, Elena was no longer the person in the most danger.
