Chapter 18 - THE BETRAYAL HELEN NEVER EXPECTED

Helen lowered the gun.

Not because she trusted Tom.

Not because she suddenly regretted everything.

Because she finally understood Victor Dane had used her exactly as she believed Evelyn had.

Agents took the weapon.

They placed Helen in handcuffs.

She did not resist.

As they walked toward the mine entrance, she looked at Victor.

“You were going to leave me.”

Victor did not answer.

Helen stopped.

“You were.”

Pierce ordered the officers to keep moving.

Helen laughed.

The sound was hollow.

“All of it.”

She looked at Victor.

“I moved the money.”

“I forged the meetings.”

“I kept her underground.”

“I risked everything.”

“And you were going to disappear.”

Victor finally spoke.

“You became unstable.”

Helen stared at him.

Tom watched whatever remained between them die.

Back at the station, Helen requested a lawyer.

Then, two hours later, she requested Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca refused to represent her because of the conflict.

Helen asked to speak with prosecutors.

She offered everything.

Passwords.

Wallet addresses.

Foreign accounts.

Private recordings.

She had secretly recorded Victor for years because part of her never trusted him.

Those recordings destroyed him.

Victor discussed bribing officials.

He discussed manipulating property assessments.

He described Evelyn’s confinement as “a temporary inconvenience.”

He joked about placing her in an overseas facility after closing.

Martin Shaw appeared in multiple recordings.

Robert Chen appeared in others.

By noon, prosecutors had enough evidence to file a sweeping conspiracy case.

Helen also gave them the location of the missing eight million dollars.

She had moved it into a separate wallet Victor could not access.

“Why?”

Pierce asked.

Helen stared at the table.

“Insurance.”

Against Victor.

Against Martin.

Against everyone.

She had trusted nobody.

Not even the father for whom she had betrayed her family.

Evelyn watched news coverage from the hospital.

Tom turned off the television.

“Do you want to see her?”

Evelyn took a long time to answer.

“Yes.”

Helen arrived under guard that evening.

Lily waited outside.

Tom stayed in the room.

Helen looked at her mother.

Evelyn looked back.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Helen whispered.

“I hated you.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

“I wanted you afraid.”

“I know.”

“I wanted you to feel powerless.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“You succeeded.”

Helen’s eyes filled with tears.

Tom expected an apology.

It did not come.

Instead Helen asked.

“Did you ever love me as much as him?”

Tom looked away.

Evelyn did not.

“Yes.”

Helen shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You cut me out.”

“After you stole from employees.”

“You chose strangers.”

“I chose responsibility.”

Helen’s anger returned.

“There it is.”

Evelyn leaned forward despite her weakness.

“I loved you enough to give you opportunity.”

“I loved you enough to trust you beside me.”

“And when you abused that trust, I refused to reward you.”

Helen stared at her.

Evelyn continued.

“That is not rejection.”

“That is consequence.”

May you like

Helen began crying silently.

For once, nobody tried to rescue her from it.
