Chapter 15 - CLAIRE'S LAST MESSAGE

Helen escaped during the evacuation.

The fire had been deliberately started.

Investigators later found hospital access cards purchased from an employee drowning in gambling debt.

Everything had been planned.

But Helen’s biggest mistake was showing Claire alive.

Now federal agents knew she had committed another kidnapping.

The video provided clues.

Concrete wall.

Industrial fan.

Blue pipe.

A faint mechanical rhythm.

Lily watched the recording twice.

Tom noticed.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“This isn’t your job.”

“I know.”

She watched again.

Then she pointed toward the screen.

“That sound.”

Pierce leaned closer.

“What about it?”

“I heard it at Grandpa’s old packing building.”

Tom frowned.

The Carter estate included several abandoned agricultural structures.

One had once packaged flowers for shipment.

Large refrigeration compressors ran behind it.

Even after the facility closed, a neighboring storage company used part of the cooling system.

Pierce dispatched teams.

They found Claire in a locked utility office.

Alive.

Cold.

Frightened.

But unharmed.

Helen was not there.

Claire had something more valuable than another clue.

A message.

“Helen kept talking to someone.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Robert?”

“No.”

“Victor?”

Claire shook her head.

“She called him Dad.”

Tom stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

Lily looked toward Evelyn.

Grandpa Carter had died six years earlier.

Evelyn’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Tom saw it.

“Mom?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Victor Dane.”

“What?”

She looked at Tom.

“Victor is Helen’s biological father.”

Silence filled the room.

Tom struggled to process the words.

Evelyn explained.

Before she married Thomas Carter Sr., she had briefly separated from him during college.

She met Victor.

The relationship lasted only a few months.

When Evelyn discovered she was pregnant, Victor wanted nothing to do with the child.

Evelyn later reconciled with Thomas.

Thomas knew the truth.

He raised Helen as his daughter.

He never treated her differently.

Helen herself did not learn until she was thirty-two.

Tom felt dizzy.

“How?”

“Victor told her.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted access to me.”

Everything shifted.

Victor had spent years approaching Carter Green with development offers.

Evelyn refused every one.

Then he discovered Helen was his daughter.

He gave her the story she secretly wanted.

He told her Evelyn had stolen her birthright.

He told her Thomas Carter had built an empire using opportunities Victor should have received.

He told her the Carter fortune belonged partly to her.

“He poisoned her against us.”

Tom spoke quietly.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Victor opened the door.”

“Helen chose to walk through it.”

Claire whispered.

“She kept calling him Dad because he promised they were finally going to own the company together.”

Rebecca looked toward the mineral-rights documents.

There was no longer any mystery.

Helen had not acted alone.

May you like

She had been helping her biological father seize Evelyn’s empire.

And Victor had spent years preparing his daughter to do it.
