Chapter 17 - The Architect’s Last Design

Vittorio was placed under federal protection.
Within six hours, someone attempted to poison his food.
The attempt failed.
That was exactly what Enzo had expected.
The poison came through a hospital pharmacy contractor.
The contractor led investigators to a Caldwell-owned medical supply company.
The company led them to an airport hangar.
By midnight, authorities knew Henry Caldwell planned to leave the country.
But Caldwell had one final advantage.
Judge Pierce.
The missing judge contacted Camilla directly.
Her phone rang at 1:12 in the morning.
“Miss Ashford.”
She recognized his voice.
“What do you want?”
“Your father’s life.”
Camilla went cold.
Charles had been moved from the hospital to a federal medical facility.
Or everyone thought he had.
Pierce knew the route.
A transportation convoy had been compromised.
Charles was missing.
Camilla stared at Enzo.
Pierce continued.
“Tell Marchetti to bring Adeline Croft to Caldwell Memorial Tower.”
Adeline heard.
“No.”
Camilla shook her head violently.
Pierce continued.
“If she does not come, Senator Ashford dies.”
The call ended.
Camilla began crying.
“I can’t ask you.”
Adeline stood.
“You’re not asking.”
“No.”
Camilla grabbed her arm.
“You don’t owe me this.”
Adeline looked at the hand.
Camilla released her immediately.
Adeline met her eyes.
“I am not doing it for you.”
“Then why?”
“For your father?”
“No.”
“For mine.”
Camilla did not understand.
Adeline looked toward Enzo.
“Caldwell wants me because he still thinks Thomas gave me something that isn’t in the Cathedral.”
Enzo frowned.
“Did he?”
“I don’t know.”
Then she remembered the photograph.
For our children, if we fail.
She ran to the archive box.
Inside the photograph, between two glued layers of paper, they found a microfilm strip.
Enzo stared.
“Your father kept one final copy.”
Adeline examined it under magnification.
Names filled the strip.
Not financial names.
Medical names.
Patients.
Dates.
Experimental drug trials.
Illegal procedures.
Deaths classified as complications.
Caldwell’s secret was bigger than bribery.
He had used vulnerable hospital patients in unauthorized research.
Hundreds.
Adeline whispered, “This destroys everything.”
Enzo looked at her.
“That is why he wants you.”
Caldwell Memorial Tower was his flagship hospital.
The highest floor contained his private research offices.
At 2:30 in the morning, Enzo and Adeline entered through the main lobby.
Federal tactical teams surrounded the building but held position.
Caldwell had threatened to kill hostages if police entered.
They took the private elevator to the twenty-fourth floor.
Camilla remained with Marco outside.
The doors opened.
Charles Ashford sat tied to a chair.
Judge Pierce stood behind him.
Henry Caldwell stood near the window.
No panic remained in Caldwell’s face.
He wore a dark suit.
Perfect tie.
Perfect posture.
Like a man preparing to address a board meeting.
“Adeline.”
She stared at him.
“You killed my father.”
Caldwell smiled.
“Your father killed himself the moment he confused morality with power.”
Enzo stepped forward.
“You said the same thing about my father?”
“Lorenzo was sentimental.”
“He believed wealth should eventually become respectable.”
“I taught him that respectability is merely power wearing better clothes.”
Adeline held up the microfilm.
Caldwell’s expression changed.
There.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Charles lifted his head.
“Don’t.”
Pierce struck him.
Camilla’s voice came through Adeline’s hidden earpiece.
“We can hear everything.”
Caldwell did not know.
Adeline moved closer.
“How many patients?”
He said nothing.
“How many?”
“Numbers are for accountants.”
“Children?”
Silence.
Her stomach turned.
“You used children.”
Caldwell’s eyes hardened.
“Progress requires risk.”
Charles whispered, “Monster.”
Caldwell looked at him.
“No.”
“I built hospitals.”
“I saved thousands.”
“History will remember that.”
Adeline shook her head.
“No.”
“It will remember all of it.”
Caldwell smiled.
“Only if you leave this room.”
He reached inside his jacket.
Enzo moved.
Judge Pierce raised a weapon.
Charles threw himself sideways, knocking Pierce off balance.
The gun fired.
Glass shattered.
Federal teams stormed the floor.
Caldwell grabbed Adeline.
He pressed a gun against her side.
Enzo stopped.
“Let her go.”
Caldwell backed toward the private elevator.
“No.”
Adeline looked at Enzo.
No fear.
Not anymore.
Caldwell pressed the button.
The doors opened.
Adeline drove her injured elbow into Caldwell’s ribs.
He staggered.
Enzo lunged.
The weapon slid across the floor.
Agents tackled Caldwell.
For the first time in thirty years, Henry Caldwell was pushed to his knees.
He looked up at Adeline.
“You think you won?”
She stood over him.
“No.”
She looked toward Charles.
Then Enzo.
May you like
Then the agents collecting evidence.
“My father did.”
