Chapter 12 - The Lawyer

Enzo returned to the mansion without calling Samuel.

That alone would tell the lawyer something was wrong.

Samuel had been with the Marchetti family for decades.

He had drafted Enzo’s first legitimate property acquisitions.

Negotiated union contracts.

Protected charities from political interference.

He had known Isabella.

He had known Lorenzo.

And his name appeared in her notebook beside people connected to Caldwell.

Adeline wanted to confront him immediately.

Enzo refused.

“If he works for Caldwell, he already expects suspicion.”

“Then what do we do?”

“We let him think we found nothing.”

They entered the mansion through the garage.

Samuel was waiting in the kitchen.

“There you are.”

Enzo stopped.

“How did you know we left?”

Samuel smiled.

“It is my job to know when my client disappears during a citywide security crisis.”

Adeline watched him carefully.

Enzo forced himself to appear irritated instead of suspicious.

“We checked one of her father’s old leads.”

“And?”

“Nothing.”

Samuel’s eyes moved toward Adeline.

“Nothing at all?”

“Dust.”

Samuel nodded.

Too quickly.

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“I mean good that you are safe.”

Enzo smiled faintly.

“Of course.”

Samuel left fifteen minutes later.

Marco followed him.

At 2:30 that afternoon, Marco called.

“He went directly to Caldwell Foundation headquarters.”

Enzo closed his eyes.

Another betrayal.

Adeline stood beside him.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“He was close to your family.”

“That appears to be the problem.”

Marco continued through the phone.

“Do you want me to bring him back?”

“No.”

Enzo looked at the notebook.

“Follow him.”

They waited.

At 3:12, Samuel left Caldwell’s building.

At 3:40, he entered Judge Pierce’s private club.

At 4:05, he returned to his office.

At 4:18, an encrypted email arrived in Enzo’s private account.

From Samuel.

The subject line read:

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I FAILED.

Enzo opened it.

The message contained no body.

Only an attachment.

A video.

Samuel appeared on screen.

He sat in his office.

Behind him, the blinds were closed.

“If Enzo is watching this, then either I am dead or I finally became brave enough to stop lying.”

Enzo stared.

Samuel continued.

“I worked for Henry Caldwell for thirty-one years.”

Adeline looked at Enzo.

Samuel’s recorded face appeared exhausted.

“I did not begin willingly.”

“My younger brother was arrested in 1995.”

“Caldwell made the charges disappear.”

“In return, I became useful.”

“I prepared companies.”

“Moved property.”

“Introduced people.”

“I told myself I was only a lawyer.”

“I told myself paperwork did not kill anyone.”

“I was wrong.”

Samuel paused.

“When Lorenzo discovered the hospital operation, Caldwell ordered Vittorio to eliminate him.”

“I knew.”

Enzo’s face hardened.

“I did nothing.”

“When Isabella discovered the truth, I knew what they planned.”

“I did nothing.”

Enzo looked away.

Adeline remained silent.

“Thomas Vale came closest to exposing us.”

“I was ordered to locate his evidence.”

“I failed.”

“For years, Caldwell assumed it was destroyed.”

“Last night, when Adeline Croft appeared in the Marchetti house, he panicked.”

Samuel inhaled slowly.

“I went to Caldwell today because I needed him to believe I was still loyal.”

“Judge Pierce will host a private dinner tomorrow night at the Drake Hotel.”

“Caldwell.”

“Vittorio.”

“Pierce.”

“Three hospital directors.”

“And possibly two federal officials.”

“They intend to destroy all remaining records and arrange for Enzo Marchetti and Adeline Croft to be blamed for a criminal conspiracy.”

Adeline whispered, “They’re going to frame us.”

Samuel continued.

“There is more.”

“Caldwell keeps one master ledger.”

“Not digital.”

“Paper.”

“He calls it the Cathedral.”

“It contains thirty years of payments.”

“Every judge.”

“Every politician.”

“Every officer.”

“Every shell company.”

“Every death authorized to protect the system.”

“He keeps it close when the network is threatened.”

“If he attends the Drake dinner, the ledger will be there.”

The video paused for a moment.

Then Samuel leaned closer.

“Enzo.”

“If you hate me, you have earned that right.”

“But if there is one thing I can still do for your parents, it is give you this chance.”

“The room is not 417.”

“It is 1408.”

“The irony would have amused your father.”

The video ended.

Enzo sat without moving.

Then his phone rang.

Marco.

May you like

His voice was tense.

“Samuel’s office just exploded.”
