Chapter 14 - THE GALA

Senator Thorne refused to cancel his annual foundation gala.

That was his mistake.

Seven hundred guests filled the Grand Regency ballroom.

Governors.

Judges.

Executives.

Donors.

Journalists.

People who had spent decades laughing at Charles Thorne’s jokes because someday they might need a favor.

Mara arrived through the front entrance.

Not the service door.

She wore a simple midnight-blue dress.

No apron.

No uniform.

No name tag.

Luca walked beside her.

Cameras erupted.

Mara’s heart pounded.

“You don’t have to do this,” Luca whispered.

“Yes.”

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

“I do.”

Bianca spotted them first.

Her smile vanished.

Charles saw them moments later.

He immediately approached.

“This is a private event.”

Luca showed his invitation.

“I donated.”

Charles’ jaw tightened.

“You were not welcome.”

“Your foundation accepted my money.”

Mara almost smiled.

Charles looked at her.

“You should leave.”

“No.”

“Mara.”

“You used my mother’s charity work to hide money.”

Several nearby guests turned.

Charles lowered his voice.

“This is not the place.”

“It’s exactly the place.”

Bianca marched toward them.

“You have some nerve.”

Mara touched her cheek.

“The swelling went down.”

Bianca flushed.

Luca stepped slightly forward.

Mara touched his arm.

“No.”

He stopped.

She looked at Bianca.

“This is between us.”

Bianca laughed.

“You think standing beside him makes you powerful?”

“No.”

Mara’s voice remained steady.

“Standing up does.”

The ballroom lights dimmed.

Charles was scheduled to give his speech.

Instead, the giant screens behind the stage flickered.

Preston’s face appeared.

Gasps spread through the room.

He was broadcasting from a protected location with federal investigators nearby.

“Good evening.”

Charles went pale.

Bianca whispered, “No.”

Preston continued.

“My name is Preston Hale.”

Everyone knew that.

“I was married to Mara Whitfield.”

Bianca’s hand tightened around her champagne glass.

“I lied to her during our divorce.”

Mara stood completely still.

“I helped conceal marital assets.”

Whispers exploded.

Charles moved toward the production booth.

The doors were blocked by investigators.

Preston continued.

“I did so under pressure from Senator Charles Thorne.”

Charles shouted, “Turn it off!”

Nobody moved.

“I also allowed Mara to be bound by a fraudulent debt contract.”

Preston’s face filled the screens.

“And I failed to protect her because I was afraid.”

Mara looked down.

For once, he had said it plainly.

No excuses.

No romantic language.

Fear.

Failure.

Truth.

Preston displayed the original security footage.

It showed Bianca entering Mara’s room.

It showed Bianca copying old footage.

It showed a technician editing timestamps.

Then it showed something worse.

Bianca paying Daniel Cross in the garage.

The date was three days before Eleanor Whitfield died.

Mara’s breath caught.

Bianca stared at the screen.

“That proves nothing.”

Preston’s voice continued.

“There is one final recording.”

Charles looked horrified.

Mara realized he did not know about Eleanor’s video.

The screen changed.

Eleanor appeared.

Mara’s mother looked out over seven hundred powerful strangers.

“If I die after this meeting, Charles, everyone should know exactly who to blame.”

The ballroom became silent.

Charles turned toward Mara.

For the first time in her life, she saw pure hatred on his face.

Not superiority.

Not annoyance.

Hatred.

Because she had survived what was supposed to break her.

The video continued.

When Charles threatened Mara on screen, several people moved away from him physically.

That was when he understood.

Power did not disappear when the truth arrived.

It migrated.

And his was leaving.

Federal agents approached the stage.

Charles lifted both hands.

“This is political theater.”

One agent held out a warrant.

“We need you to come with us, Senator.”

Bianca backed away.

Then she turned.

She moved toward Mara.

Luca saw it.

So did security.

But Bianca did not attack.

She leaned close enough to whisper.

“You think you won?”

Mara looked at her.

Bianca smiled.

“You still don’t know where Daniel is.”

Mara’s face changed.

Bianca whispered one more sentence.

May you like

“And you have no idea what your mother did before she died.”

Then she walked away before investigators could stop her.
