Chapter 13 - ELEVEN MINUTES

The video lasted eleven minutes and fourteen seconds.
Mara watched every second.
In it, Eleanor looked weak but determined.
Charles Thorne looked irritated.
“You are sick,” he told her.
“I was healthy before Keller changed my medication.”
“You have cancer.”
“I have the original scans.”
Charles leaned back.
“You are confused.”
“I also have the accounts.”
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Eleanor continued.
“You paid Judge Warren.”
Silence.
“You paid Keller.”
Charles looked toward the camera.
He did not know it was recording.
“You paid Daniel.”
“Stop.”
“You used charities to wash campaign money.”
Charles leaned forward.
“You have a daughter.”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“Yes.”
“You should think about her.”
“I think about her every minute.”
“Then stop.”
Mara paused the video.
Her hand shook.
Luca sat beside her.
“Do you want to continue?”
“Yes.”
She pressed play.
Charles lowered his voice.
“Give me the files.”
“No.”
“Eleanor.”
“If you touch Mara, I send everything.”
“To whom?”
“People you cannot control.”
Charles laughed.
“There is nobody I cannot reach.”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“That is why men like you eventually fall.”
The video ended after Charles stood and left the room.
There was no explicit confession to murder.
But the threats were clear.
The financial discussion was clear.
And Eleanor’s accusation about Dr. Keller was on record.
Mercer watched once.
“This changes everything.”
“Enough for charges?”
“Enough for subpoenas.”
“Against a senator?”
“With the financial records, absolutely.”
Luca crossed his arms.
“Then move quickly.”
Mercer nodded.
“I already have a meeting with a federal prosecutor.”
Mara looked up.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“No.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Mercer frowned.
“No?”
“We don’t hand over the only copy.”
“It won’t be the only copy.”
“Good.”
Mara took the memory card.
“We make ten.”
Luca smiled slightly.
Mercer stared at him.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Luca looked at Mara.
“I like her plan.”
Copies were placed with separate attorneys.
One went into a bank vault.
One went to a journalist with instructions to publish if Mara disappeared.
Another went to federal investigators.
For the first time, the evidence could no longer be erased by taking one person.
Charles Thorne learned this before midnight.
He called Mara directly.
She answered.
“You have been busy.”
“So have you.”
“You released confidential material.”
“My mother’s recording belongs to me.”
“It was illegally obtained.”
“Then challenge it in court.”
Silence.
Mara smiled despite herself.
Charles heard the confidence in her voice.
“You’ve changed.”
“No.”
She looked toward Luca.
“I just stopped being afraid of you.”
“That is a dangerous mistake.”
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
“Thinking I would stay afraid forever was yours.”
Charles hung up.
Three hours later, Senator Thorne’s office issued a statement calling the allegations fabricated.
Bianca posted photographs of herself volunteering at a children’s charity.
Preston remained missing.
Then another video appeared online.
Security footage from the Thorne mansion.
It showed Mara entering Preston’s bedroom six months earlier.
The clip ended with a misleading caption.
FORMER WIFE CAUGHT SNEAKING INTO MARRIED MAN’S ROOM.
Mara stared at the screen.
“I never went into his bedroom.”
Luca examined the footage.
“It’s edited.”
“People won’t care.”
Within an hour, social media filled with accusations.
Gold digger.
Mistress.
Liar.
Maid who seduced two wealthy men.
Bianca gave a television interview while fighting tears.
“I tried to help her.”
Mara nearly threw the remote.
Luca turned off the television.
“Don’t watch.”
“I need to know what they’re saying.”
“No.”
“I spent three years letting them create my story.”
She turned the television back on.
“This time I’m listening.”
The interviewer asked Bianca whether Mara’s child belonged to Preston.
Bianca lowered her eyes theatrically.
“I pray it doesn’t.”
Mara stared.
Then the front door opened.
One of Luca’s guards entered.
Behind him stood a bruised, exhausted man.
Preston.
Bianca’s television interview continued in the background.
Preston looked at Mara.
“I know how to prove she edited the footage.”
Mara stood.
“How?”
May you like
He held up a small server drive.
“Because I stole the original security archive before I escaped.”
