Chapter 10 - THE SHIP STILL AT SEA
The Navy moved quickly once the possibility of active defective components became credible.
The remaining vessel was ordered into port for immediate inspection.
Two retired ships were reviewed through archived maintenance records.
Investigators discovered something horrifying.
The faulty production batch had been broader than originally reported.
Vale Maritime had replaced some assemblies over the years without admitting why.
Others had remained in service.
One replacement occurred after an emergency malfunction that had never been publicly linked to Vale.
No one died.
Only luck prevented it.
Public pressure exploded.
Vale Global stock in private secondary markets plunged.
Banks reviewed credit facilities.
Insurance carriers demanded disclosures.
Government agencies suspended new contract awards.
Arthur went from defending his reputation to defending the survival of his company.
He called me directly.
No lawyers.
No intermediaries.
"Meet me."
"No."
"You've made your point."
"I haven't started making it."
"You think this is victory?"
"I think sailors are alive because the Navy inspected equipment you sold them."
"You don't understand how companies operate at this scale."
"Apparently I understand enough."
"There are mistakes in every manufacturing process."
"Falsifying failed test results is not a mistake."
He went quiet.
Then his voice softened.
"Celeste."
I hated when he tried sounding like my father.
"You were always the brightest one."
"Don't."
"You were."
"You punished me for it."
"I tried to prepare you."
"For what?"
"The real world."
I looked around Rebecca's conference room.
Investigators were working behind glass walls.
"The real world where forty million dollars matters more than twenty-three lives?"
"It was never that simple."
"It is exactly that simple."
"No."
His voice hardened.
"Thousands of employees depended on that contract."
"So you risked sailors."
"Nobody believed the component would actually fail."
"Thomas Keene did."
"Keene was excessively cautious."
"He was right."
"He was disloyal."
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
To Arthur Vale, morality was negotiable.
Loyalty was not.
"Did you order Harlan Pike to threaten him?"
Silence.
"Did you order Pike to follow me?"
Another silence.
"Did you have my medical records leaked?"
"I protected this family."
"No."
I looked through the glass toward Julian and Vivienne, both giving separate statements to investigators.
"You protected yourself."
Arthur exhaled slowly.
"What do you want?"
"I already told you."
"The truth."
"Then you're a fool."
"Maybe."
"The truth will destroy your mother's life."
"She helped hide it."
"It will destroy Vivienne."
"She can decide what to do with her part."
"It will send Julian to prison."
"If he committed crimes, that's not my decision."
"It will cost thousands of people their jobs."
"That's the first real argument you've made."
He paused.
I continued.
"Which is why we've asked the court for independent management instead of immediate liquidation."
That caught him off guard.
"What?"
"We're not trying to burn the company down."
"You've already burned it."
"No."
"You're confusing Vale Global with Arthur Vale."
I almost enjoyed the silence.
"The company may survive."
"You may not."
He laughed.
A dry, dangerous sound.
"You think a judge is going to take my company away because my wounded daughter is angry?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Because the board breached fiduciary duties."
"Because safety data was falsified."
"Because evidence was destroyed."
"Because witnesses were intimidated."
"And because the controlling shareholder may have used corporate assets to obstruct investigations."
He said nothing.
"Goodbye, Father."
"Celeste."
I waited.
"If I fall, you fall with me."
I looked at the scar on my hand.
"I already fell."
Then I ended the call.
That afternoon, a federal judge granted temporary restrictions preventing Arthur from destroying, transferring, or concealing major corporate assets.
The board called an emergency session.
For the first time in thirty-four years, Arthur Vale entered Vale Global headquarters knowing he could be removed.
He responded the only way he knew.
He tried to buy the board.
Two directors accepted promises.
Three refused.
One secretly recorded him.
