Chapter 9 - THE SYRINGE IN THE WHITE COAT

The hospital floor went into lockdown.
Every elevator stopped.
Every stairwell was guarded.
Police reviewed security footage frame by frame.
The man who entered using Charles Whitmore’s name had planned carefully.
Baseball cap.
Glasses.
Mask.
Medical shoes.
Disposable coat.
He had copied a visitor badge.
He knew which floor Elena was on.
He knew which hallway had weak camera coverage.
And he knew exactly when nurses changed shifts.
That level of information worried Ruiz.
“This wasn’t improvised.”
He said.
Someone had prepared hospital access in advance.
The syringe was rushed to the lab.
The result came forty-five minutes later.
It contained a concentrated sedative.
Enough to cause severe complications if administered improperly.
For Elena, heavily pregnant after a traumatic fall, the risk could have been catastrophic.
Dr. Blake disconnected every medication Elena had been receiving.
“Nothing enters this room unless I personally approve it.”
She told the staff.
Elena watched the old IV bag being sealed as evidence.
She felt strangely calm.
Fear had become too large to feel normally.
Ruiz entered.
“They didn’t inject you.”
Elena nodded.
“I know.”
“We caught it.”
“This time.”
Ruiz sat beside her.
“Listen.”
She looked at him.
“They are losing control.”
“That makes them more dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“But also more careless.”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Do you have Graham?”
“Not yet.”
“Charles?”
“Being watched.”
“Adrian?”
“No confirmed location.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“Then Adrian is the one I’m most worried about.”
Ruiz agreed.
At 9:32 a.m., Adrian Mercer walked into a storage facility across town.
He used a code to enter unit 814.
Inside were three boxes.
A suitcase.
Two laptops.
And a safe.
Adrian opened the safe.
He removed a folder marked MERCER SUCCESSION.
His hands shook.
For months, he had believed he understood the plan.
He would become Elena’s temporary guardian if she became medically incapacitated.
Graham would retain control of Mercer Industries.
Charles would restructure the trusts.
Camille would remain quiet.
Everyone would receive money.
Adrian had told himself Elena would survive.
That was how he slept.
They were not killing her.
They were merely delaying her control.
Protecting the company.
Protecting themselves.
That lie had worked until Camille pushed Elena.
Now everything was collapsing.
Adrian opened the folder.
Inside was a document he had never seen.
He read it.
Then read it again.
His face went white.
It was a contingency agreement.
If Elena died before childbirth, Graham Vale would gain management authority over the family trust for ten years.
Adrian would receive nothing.
Nothing except a life insurance payment.
He turned the page.
Another document.
A life insurance policy on Elena.
Twenty-five million dollars.
Beneficiary.
Adrian Mercer.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
He had never signed it.
Adrian stared.
His signature had been forged.
Charles and Graham had created a motive for him.
If Elena died, investigators would find a husband with a mistress, financial problems, and a twenty-five-million-dollar insurance policy.
Adrian dropped into a chair.
They had never planned to make him powerful.
They had planned to make him guilty.
His phone rang.
CHARLES.
Adrian did not answer.
It rang again.
Then a message arrived.
Where are you?
Adrian grabbed the folder.
Another text.
Graham wants the papers.
Adrian looked around the storage unit.
For the first time, he understood exactly how disposable he was.
He dialed Elena.
At St. Vincent’s, her phone vibrated.
She stared at the screen.
Ruiz saw the name.
“Speaker.”
Elena answered.
“Adrian.”
His voice sounded broken.
“I need to see you.”
“No.”
“I found something.”
“So did I.”
“Elena, please.”
She almost laughed.
“Please?”
“I know how this sounds.”
“No.”
“You don’t.”
“You were part of a plan to take control of me.”
Silence.
“You disabled my mother’s cameras.”
Silence.
“You knew Camille was coming to the house.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“I didn’t know she would push you.”
“But you knew she was coming.”
“Yes.”
Elena’s eyes closed.
That confirmation hurt more than she expected.
“Why?”
“I needed her to pressure you.”
“To sign what?”
“The incapacity agreement.”
Ruiz wrote quickly.
Elena continued.
“You wanted me declared mentally incompetent.”
“Temporarily.”
The word was so absurd Elena nearly lost control.
“Temporarily?”
“I thought it would protect the company.”
“You mean protect your money.”
“No.”
“Stop lying.”
Adrian breathed heavily.
“I found documents.”
“What documents?”
“They were going to kill you.”
Ruiz looked up.
Elena became still.
Adrian continued.
“They were setting me up for it.”
“Who?”
“Graham and Charles.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Then I can’t help you.”
“You want to help me?”
“No.”
Adrian became quiet.
Elena continued.
“But Detective Ruiz might keep you alive long enough to testify.”
Ruiz almost smiled.
Adrian whispered.
“Is he there?”
“Yes.”
“I want immunity.”
Ruiz shook his head.
Elena said.
“You’re not getting immunity.”
“Then I disappear.”
“You won’t make it.”
Adrian’s breathing stopped.
Elena’s voice remained calm.
“They forged a twenty-five-million-dollar life insurance policy with you as beneficiary.”
Adrian froze.
“How do you know?”
“You just told us.”
Ruiz looked impressed.
Elena continued.
“If Graham planned to blame you for my death, do you honestly think he’ll let you leave with documents that prove it?”
Adrian said nothing.
Then Elena heard something.
A metal sound.
Like a door opening.
Adrian whispered.
“Oh God.”
“What?”
“They found me.”
The phone moved.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Adrian breathing.
Then a gunshot.
Elena flinched.
The line remained open.
Ruiz grabbed the phone.
“Adrian!”
Another gunshot.
Then silence.
Ruiz traced the call immediately.
Storage facility.
West district.
Officers were dispatched.
Elena stared at the screen.
Adrian’s call remained connected for fourteen more seconds.
Then a final voice spoke.
Not Adrian.
Not Charles.
Not Graham.
A woman.
May you like
“Tell Elena the staircase was only the beginning.”
The line went dead.
