Chapter 4 - DANIEL’S DRAWER

Robert closed the door behind him.

No one moved.

Thomas stood between us and his brother.

“How did you know?”

Robert looked tired rather than angry.

“Mother knew you would panic.”

Adrian tightened his fist around the key.

“What’s in the drawer?”

Robert’s eyes flicked toward him.

“Something that should have remained buried.”

“Daniel didn’t think so.”

“Daniel was reckless.”

“Daniel was murdered.”

Robert’s face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

Adrian saw it too.

“You know.”

Robert looked toward Thomas.

“What have you told him?”

“Enough.”

“No.”

Robert’s voice sharpened.

“You’ve told him fragments, which is more dangerous than telling him nothing.”

I stepped forward.

“Then tell us everything.”

Robert laughed once.

It sounded empty.

“You think this began with money?”

“Didn’t it?”

“No.”

He looked at Adrian.

“The trust was how Eleanor controlled people.”

“Then what was the blood for?”

Robert said nothing.

Thomas answered instead.

“Testing.”

Robert spun toward him.

“Stop.”

“What testing?” Adrian demanded.

Thomas looked sick.

“I don’t know.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes, you do.”

The brothers stared at each other.

That was when I understood.

Thomas knew more than he had admitted.

“Tell him,” Robert said quietly.

Thomas sat down again.

“When Eleanor married your grandfather, she had already lost two pregnancies.”

Adrian frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“She became obsessed with the Vale bloodline.”

I felt a chill.

“She believed something was wrong with the men.”

Robert turned away.

Thomas continued.

“Your grandfather had a rare inherited condition.”

“What condition?”

“A genetic mutation affecting cardiac function.”

Adrian stared at him.

“The condition everyone said killed Daniel?”

Thomas nodded.

“But it didn’t kill him.”

“No.”

“Then why were they taking blood?”

“To test every male heir.”

My mind raced.

“That could have been done legally at a hospital.”

“It was.”

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“At first.”

“What changed?”

“Eleanor discovered something she didn’t want outsiders to know.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?”

Robert suddenly interrupted.

“We need to leave.”

Thomas ignored him.

“She discovered Daniel didn’t carry the mutation.”

Adrian froze.

“That’s good.”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide it?”

Thomas looked at him with deep sadness.

“Because neither do you.”

I didn’t understand.

Adrian did.

His face changed completely.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas lowered his head.

“You and Daniel were told your entire lives that you inherited the Vale cardiac mutation.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t.”

“Then why did our doctors say we did?”

Robert answered this time.

“Because Eleanor paid them.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Adrian stared at his uncle.

“For what?”

“To keep you afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Leaving.”

I suddenly remembered Adrian’s childhood stories.

No contact sports.

Regular private medical evaluations.

No extended travel without family approval.

No moving overseas.

No refusing family physicians.

He had believed his heart could stop without warning.

The condition had controlled his entire life.

And now they were saying he never had it.

Adrian backed away.

“My brother spent thirty-one years believing he could die at any moment.”

Thomas nodded.

“So did you.”

“Why?”

“Because frightened heirs are obedient heirs.”

Adrian’s hand slammed against the table.

“Why did Daniel die?”

Neither man answered.

“Why did Daniel die?”

Robert finally looked at him.

“Because he found out.”

A noise came from outside.

Detective Ortiz emerged from the darkness with another officer.

Robert swore under his breath.

“You brought police.”

“Yes,” I said.

Robert looked almost relieved.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

“I think we’re beginning to.”

“No.”

Robert shook his head.

“You think Eleanor is the worst person involved.”

“Isn’t she?”

Robert looked toward the estate.

“No.”

Detective Ortiz entered.

“Everyone stays where they are.”

She spoke to Robert.

“I need your phone.”

He handed it over immediately.

That surprised all of us.

Then he looked at Adrian.

“Get the drawer.”

Ortiz frowned.

“What drawer?”

Robert explained.

Detective Ortiz insisted on accompanying us.

The old Vale mansion sat less than half a mile away.

Most of the wedding guests had already left.

Only family remained.

The estate felt strangely quiet.

We entered through the east corridor.

Adrian knew the route to his grandfather’s study without turning on the lights.

The room smelled of leather and dust.

An enormous wooden map cabinet stood against the wall.

Adrian knelt.

The brass key fit the bottom drawer.

He turned it.

Nothing happened.

“Pull the drawer outward while turning,” Robert said.

Adrian did.

A hidden compartment clicked open beneath it.

Inside sat a black notebook.

Several photographs.

A flash drive.

And one sealed envelope.

Adrian picked up the notebook.

Daniel’s handwriting covered the first page.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, ELEANOR FOUND OUT I KNOW.

Adrian’s hands shook.

The next page contained names.

Dr. Samuel Mercer.

Victor Hale.

Eleanor Vale.

Robert Vale.

Thomas Vale.

Then another name.

Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

I recognized it.

“She’s Adrian’s current cardiologist.”

Thomas nodded miserably.

Adrian turned the page.

There were dates beside each name.

Wedding dates.

Hospital dates.

Blood test dates.

Then we reached a page that made everyone stop.

Daniel had drawn a family tree.

Several names were circled in red.

Beside the circles, he had written DNA MISMATCH.

Adrian stared at the diagram.

“What does that mean?”

Robert whispered something.

I almost didn’t hear him.

“Daniel discovered some of the Vale heirs weren’t genetically related to the men listed as their fathers.”

Adrian looked up.

“Who?”

Robert didn’t answer.

Adrian followed the red circles down the family tree.

One line stopped beside his own name.

ADRIAN VALE.

Red circle.

DNA MISMATCH.

His eyes moved to Daniel.

Another red circle.

DNA MISMATCH.

Adrian slowly looked at Thomas.

Thomas began crying.

“Dad?”

Thomas shook his head.

Adrian’s voice broke.

“Are you my father?”

May you like

Thomas covered his face.

And Detective Ortiz quietly closed the study door.
