Chapter 1 - THE MEN AT THE DOOR

The first sign that Chloe’s perfect wedding had begun to collapse was not my father walking through the ballroom doors.

It was the sudden disappearance of every hotel employee.

One moment, servers were frozen beside tables holding silver trays.

The next, they quietly stepped away from the guests and moved toward the walls.

The wedding planner lowered her headset.

The banquet manager appeared beside her.

Then six men in dark suits entered through the main doors.

They did not look like hotel security.

They moved with the calm precision of people who already knew exactly where every exit was.

Chloe stopped laughing.

Eleanor frowned.

“What is this?”

The tallest man ignored her.

He crossed the ballroom directly toward me.

“Mrs. Carter?”

Dominic stiffened beside his mother.

I looked at the man.

“Yes.”

“My name is Daniel Mercer.”

He took off his suit jacket and gently held it out to me.

“Your father asked me to make sure you were covered.”

The ballroom went silent again.

I took the jacket and pulled it around my torn maternity gown.

“Thank you.”

Daniel turned toward the banquet manager.

“Lock the ballroom.”

Chloe’s mouth fell open.

“You can’t lock my guests inside!”

Daniel looked at her for the first time.

“Until hotel security completes its review of an alleged theft involving property valued at more than one million dollars, nobody leaves.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“This is my daughter’s wedding.”

Daniel did not blink.

“This is Mr. Vale’s hotel.”

The name produced a strange ripple through the room.

A few older guests immediately looked toward each other.

One man near the bar whispered something to his wife.

Dominic’s father, Harold, suddenly stopped smiling.

Eleanor did not notice.

“Whoever Mr. Vale is, he can wait.”

Daniel’s expression remained perfectly professional.

“No, ma’am.”

He glanced toward me.

“He cannot.”

Chloe pointed at me again.

“She stole my ring.”

Daniel looked toward the scattered contents of my purse.

Then he looked at the torn fabric of my dress.

“Was Mrs. Carter searched by hotel security?”

Chloe hesitated.

“My mother searched her.”

Daniel’s face changed slightly.

“Without consent?”

“She had nothing to hide.”

“That was not my question.”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“I did what needed to be done.”

Daniel turned toward one of the men behind him.

“Preserve every camera feed from six p.m. onward.”

The man nodded.

“Already happening.”

My heart beat harder.

Amanda was still standing near the flower arrangement.

Her silver purse had disappeared.

That frightened me more than anything.

I searched the room.

She was moving slowly toward the service corridor.

“Daniel.”

He followed my gaze.

“Amanda.”

The moment I said her name, Amanda ran.

Two security officers intercepted her before she made it ten feet.

Guests screamed and backed away from their chairs.

Amanda fought them desperately.

“I didn’t do anything!”

Her purse slipped from beneath her arm.

It struck the floor.

The silver clasp opened.

Lipstick fell out.

A compact mirror bounced once.

Then something bright rolled across the marble.

It stopped beneath the edge of Chloe’s wedding gown.

The diamond ring.

Nobody moved.

Chloe stared down at it.

Eleanor’s face drained of color.

Dominic whispered,

“Oh my God.”

Amanda began crying.

“I can explain.”

Daniel looked toward Chloe.

“I believe all of us would like to hear that explanation.”

Chloe quickly bent down and grabbed the ring.

“There.”

She forced a laugh.

“Amanda found it.”

Amanda stared at her.

“No.”

Chloe’s smile disappeared.

Amanda’s breathing became ragged.

“You told me to take it.”

A hundred phones immediately rose into the air.

Chloe whispered,

“Shut up.”

Amanda shook her head.

“You told me to put it in Vivienne’s purse.”

I felt Dominic turn toward his sister.

“What?”

Amanda pointed toward Chloe with a trembling hand.

“She said everyone needed to finally see what Vivienne really was.”

Chloe lunged toward her.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Amanda covered her face.

“She said it would only be there for five minutes.”

My baby moved beneath my hand.

I looked at Chloe.

Three years of insults suddenly seemed small compared with what I was hearing.

“You planned this.”

Chloe’s eyes found mine.

For the first time since I had known her, there was fear in them.

Before she could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.

An older man walked inside.

Silver hair.

Dark charcoal suit.

No bodyguards beside him because the people around him already knew he did not need an introduction.

I had not seen my father in almost seven months.

He looked directly at my torn gown.

Then at Dominic.

Then at Eleanor.

The warmth vanished from his face.

“Which one of you touched my daughter?”
