Chapter 19 - The Last Recording

Emergency lights flickered red.

Michael pushed Emily’s wheelchair behind the nurses’ station.

Thomas moved toward the stairwell.

Another shot.

People screamed.

Hospital security rushed toward the sound.

Christopher disappeared.

Michael shouted his name.

No answer.

Emily grabbed Michael’s sleeve.

“Stay with us.”

Michael looked toward Noah’s NICU room.

Then toward Mason.

For once, there was no hesitation.

He stayed.

Thirty seconds later, the lights returned.

Thomas appeared.

“He’s gone.”

“Christopher?”

“Yes.”

“Was he hit?”

“No blood.”

Michael looked at the locker key in his hand.

“He planned this.”

Emily stared at him.

“You think Christopher caused the outage?”

“I think he used it.”

Thomas nodded.

“Maybe Marcus followed him.”

Michael turned toward the elevator.

“Union Station.”

Emily shook her head.

“You’re not going alone.”

“I’m not putting you in danger again.”

“You don’t get to make that decision for me.”

Michael stopped.

Emily continued.

“Call the federal agents.”

Michael did.

Forty minutes later, two agents opened locker 318.

Inside sat an old leather briefcase.

The ledger was real.

Bank transfers.

Property payments.

Bribes.

Offshore accounts.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

Then Thomas found a smaller envelope.

MICHAEL.

Michael opened it.

Inside was a letter from Christopher.

Mikey,

If you are reading this, I finally decided you deserved the truth more than I deserved revenge.

Marcus did not build Victor’s network after Dad died.

I did.

Michael stopped reading.

Emily stared at him.

“What?”

He handed her the letter.

Christopher had taken control of several shell companies after Victor’s death.

He claimed he did it to identify everyone involved.

But over six years, surveillance became manipulation.

Manipulation became blackmail.

And Christopher became the unseen man behind dozens of operations.

The cameras inside Michael’s house had ultimately been Christopher’s.

Sophia had purchased equipment using her credentials because Marcus convinced her she was watching Emily.

But Christopher had secretly accessed the network too.

Michael whispered.

“He was watching all of us.”

Thomas continued reading.

Christopher had learned Marcus was stealing from Carter Dynamics.

Instead of warning Michael, he allowed it.

He wanted Marcus to expose himself.

Emily looked sick.

“He used us as bait.”

Michael nodded.

The final page contained another confession.

Christopher had known Sophia would confront Emily.

He had watched her enter the house.

He had watched her search the study.

He had seen the staircase camera live.

Michael stopped breathing.

“He saw Sophia push you.”

Emily’s face emptied.

“He could have called someone.”

Michael continued reading.

Christopher had deliberately waited.

Because he believed catching Sophia and Marcus together would expose the network.

Mason’s discovery of the camera had destroyed his plan.

Michael crushed the letter in his hand.

Emily stared straight ahead.

“He let it happen.”

Thomas whispered.

“And he vanished during the blackout.”

Michael looked toward the security monitor.

A thought struck him.

“The stairway camera.”

Emily turned.

“What?”

“The original recording was remotely deleted.”

“Yes.”

“But Christopher was watching live.”

Emily understood.

“He may have another copy.”

Thomas immediately checked the flash drive.

Forty-six files.

Then he noticed a hidden partition.

One additional file.

STAIRCASE_FULL.

Michael opened it.

There was Emily.

Sophia.

The shove.

The fall.

Michael entering.

Sophia’s lie.

Then Michael’s slap.

Michael looked away.

“Keep going.”

The recording continued after the ambulance left.

Sophia remained in the house.

She searched the study.

Then Jonathan entered.

They argued.

Finally, another man appeared.

The navy coat.

Silver collar pin.

The man turned toward the camera.

Michael stared at the screen.

It was not Christopher.

It was Marcus.

Daniel Reeves.

Marcus opened the clock.

He removed the red folder.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

He smiled.

And spoke.

There was no audio.

But Thomas read his lips.

“Thank you, Christopher.”

Michael felt cold.

Marcus had known Christopher was watching.

Which meant their war had never been secret.

Emily whispered.

“They’ve been playing against each other.”

Michael nodded.

“And everyone else has been collateral.”

His phone rang.

Sophia.

Michael answered.

“Where are you?”

Sophia was crying.

“Michael.”

“What happened?”

“He took Mason.”

Michael’s blood stopped.

“What?”

Sophia’s voice broke.

“Marcus took Mason.”

Emily turned white.

Michael gripped the phone.

“How?”

“He came through the hospital service elevator.”

“Where are you?”

“In the parking garage.”

Michael ran.

Sophia continued.

“He said if you want Mason alive, bring the ledger.”

Michael reached the elevator.

“Where?”

Sophia swallowed.

“The old Carter shipyard.”

Michael stopped.

The abandoned shipyard had once belonged to Victor Carter.

The same place from which Christopher’s boat had departed twenty-seven years earlier.

Michael understood.

May you like

Marcus was not simply asking for evidence.

He was bringing the Carter family back to where everything began.
