Chapter 2 - THE LAST DOCUMENT

The paramedic wrapped my hand while a police officer spoke with Robert in the foyer.

Margaret remained near the Christmas table.

She had stopped shouting.

That worried me more than her anger.

Daniel kept pacing between the dining room and hallway.

Every few seconds, he glanced at the brown envelope.

Robert stayed beside it.

Almost like he knew Daniel might try to take it.

The paramedic asked, “Pain from one to ten?”

“Seven.”

Daniel sighed from across the room.

I looked at him.

The paramedic looked too.

Daniel seemed to realize how he sounded.

“I just meant she has a high pain tolerance.”

I almost smiled.

Seven years of marriage had given him endless ways to minimize me.

Apparently even now he could not stop.

The officer approached.

“Mrs. Carter, we need your account of what happened.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“It was a family argument.”

The officer held up his hand.

“I asked Mrs. Carter.”

Margaret’s jaw tightened.

I explained everything.

The argument had started because Margaret criticized the Christmas dessert I brought.

Then she criticized my dress.

Then my job.

Then my parents.

I finally told her I would not spend another holiday being insulted.

She told me that marrying Daniel did not make me family.

I said that perhaps I should stop acting like it did.

That was when she slapped me.

I fell.

The soup spilled.

And Daniel made his comment.

The officer wrote everything down.

Then he asked, “Do you want to file a complaint?”

The room changed.

Daniel stopped pacing.

Nicole looked up.

Margaret stared at me.

Robert said nothing.

I looked at my mother-in-law.

She had slapped me before.

Not hard.

Not like tonight.

A sharp hit on my wrist when I reached for the wrong serving spoon.

A shove in the hallway at Daniel’s birthday party.

A slap against the back of my shoulder when I corrected her.

Every time, Daniel told me she was old-fashioned.

Every time, I accepted some version of an apology that was never actually an apology.

I looked at the officer.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s head snapped toward me.

“Emily.”

The officer wrote something down.

Margaret’s mouth fell open.

“You would have me arrested on Christmas?”

I looked at her.

“You hit me on Christmas.”

She stared at me.

The officer asked Robert and Nicole whether they had witnessed the incident.

Nicole hesitated.

I watched her.

She had laughed.

Not loudly.

But she had laughed.

Now she looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Margaret turned.

“Nicole.”

Nicole looked at the floor.

“She slapped Emily.”

Margaret’s expression became icy.

The officer looked at Robert.

“I heard the slap from the hallway and saw Emily against the table immediately after.”

Another officer entered.

They spoke quietly.

Nobody was placed in handcuffs immediately.

Instead, the officers explained the next steps and asked Margaret to gather her identification.

Daniel suddenly exploded.

“This is insane.”

Robert looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel pointed at me.

“She’s destroying the family.”

I stared at him.

“I’m sitting here with a burned hand.”

“And you’re still doing this.”

Something about those words made me understand Daniel more clearly than seven years of marriage ever had.

In his mind, consequences were things other people did to him.

His affair was my reaction.

His lies were my discovery.

His mother’s violence was my complaint.

Nothing was ever his responsibility.

Robert picked up the envelope.

“Emily needs medical treatment.”

I stood carefully.

“I want the last document.”

Daniel froze.

Robert looked at me.

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“Dad.”

Robert’s face hardened.

“Move.”

Daniel did not.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I understand exactly what I’m doing.”

“You’ll ruin everything.”

Robert lowered his voice.

“You already did.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, please.”

It was the first time that evening he sounded genuinely afraid.

Not angry.

Not irritated.

Afraid.

I held out my uninjured hand.

“Give me the document.”

Robert slowly opened the envelope.

Margaret moved toward him.

Robert stepped away.

He removed a thin folder.

On the front was the name Carter Family Holdings.

I knew the company.

It controlled three commercial properties and several investment accounts.

Daniel had always told me it belonged to his parents.

Robert opened the folder.

“Twenty-two years ago, my brother and I started Carter Holdings.”

I nodded.

Robert continued.

“When he died, his ownership transferred to me.”

Margaret frowned.

“We know this.”

Robert ignored her.

“Over the years, I transferred pieces of the company into trusts for Daniel and Nicole.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

Robert turned the next page.

“Five years ago, Daniel asked me to accelerate his inheritance.”

I stared at Daniel.

Another secret.

Robert said, “He wanted capital for the business.”

“How much?”

“His entire share.”

Nicole gasped.

“Daniel.”

He refused to look at her.

Robert continued.

“I transferred assets valued at roughly three point four million dollars.”

My knees almost weakened again.

Three point four million.

And I had been using my grandmother’s money to cover his payroll.

Robert looked ashamed.

“He lost almost all of it within two years.”

I whispered, “How?”

“Bad investments.”

Daniel cut in.

“They were calculated risks.”

Robert looked at him.

“You invested in companies owned by friends who were already insolvent.”

“They could have recovered.”

“They didn’t.”

Robert handed me a financial report.

The numbers blurred.

I looked at Daniel.

“You let me give you hundreds of thousands of dollars while you had already lost more than three million?”

“I was going to fix it.”

“How?”

He said nothing.

Robert opened another page.

“Then he began moving money from the company operating accounts.”

I stared.

“What company?”

Robert looked at me.

“Your company.”

I blinked.

“I don’t have a company.”

Robert looked confused.

“Yes, you do.”

Daniel shut his eyes.

And suddenly I knew.

I remembered a small investment LLC Daniel had convinced me to create four years earlier.

He said it would simplify tax reporting for my trust distributions.

I barely thought about it.

He handled the paperwork.

“What did you do?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Nothing illegal.”

Robert said, “That is for the accountants to determine.”

He handed me another document.

The company name appeared across the top.

EHC Ventures LLC.

My initials.

Emily Harper Carter.

Below it were dozens of transfers.

Twenty thousand.

Forty-five thousand.

Seventy thousand.

Twelve thousand.

Again and again.

Total withdrawals.

One million, six hundred and twenty-seven thousand dollars.

My vision went blurry.

“That account never had that much.”

Robert nodded.

“Not at first.”

I looked at him.

“Then how?”

He pointed to a line.

Deposits.

Large deposits.

From Carter Consulting.

Daniel’s business.

I stared at my husband.

“You moved company money into an LLC in my name?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“It was temporary.”

Robert said, “Then he moved it out.”

“Where?”

Robert turned one final page.

The answer was there.

A series of international wire transfers.

My heart pounded.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

I had never seen him look so defeated.

Robert said, “If Carter Consulting gets audited, the transactions may appear to have been authorized by Emily.”

I stared at the forged signatures.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Daniel had not just lied to me.

He had not just used my money.

He had built a financial trail that pointed toward me.

I whispered, “You were setting me up.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I swear to God.”

“Then why is my name everywhere?”

“It was easier.”

“Easier for who?”

He had no answer.

Robert looked at me.

“The attorney I called specializes in family law, but she has already contacted a financial-crimes attorney.”

Margaret erupted.

“Financial crimes?”

Robert turned to her.

“Yes.”

“You’re going to send your own son to prison?”

Daniel snapped, “Mom.”

Robert stared at her.

“I am going to stop him from sending Emily there.”

That silenced everyone.

A paramedic appeared beside me.

“We really need to take you in.”

I nodded.

Robert handed me the folder.

“Take this.”

Daniel reached for it.

I pulled it against my chest.

He stopped.

“Emily, please don’t give that to anyone tonight.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because you’re upset.”

“I’m burned.”

“I know.”

“My face is swollen.”

“I know.”

“You cheated on me.”

He looked around the room.

“Can we not do this here?”

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

It hurt my cheek.

“You were perfectly comfortable humiliating me here twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There are things you don’t understand.”

I looked at the folder.

“Then explain.”

He glanced toward his parents.

Then Nicole.

Then the police.

“No.”

That single word told me everything.

I walked toward the door.

Daniel followed.

“Emily.”

Robert stepped between us.

“Leave her alone.”

Daniel looked over his father’s shoulder.

“If she gives those documents to the wrong person, she could lose everything too.”

I stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel said nothing.

Robert looked confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel’s eyes remained locked on mine.

“There’s another account.”

Robert froze.

“What account?”

Daniel whispered, “One Dad doesn’t know about.”

A cold sensation traveled through me.

“Whose name is on it?”

May you like

Daniel looked at me.

“Yours.”
