Chapter 10 - The Signature After Frederick Was Born

We contacted the hospital the next morning.
Every legitimate form Amy had signed during Frederick’s birth was accounted for.
Consent forms.
Insurance records.
Discharge documents.
Nothing involved property.
Nothing involved Teresa.
That meant my mother had slipped unrelated paperwork into a moment when Amy was physically exhausted and emotionally vulnerable.
The thought made me furious.
Amy was devastated.
“I should have read everything.”
“You had just given birth.”
“I still signed it.”
“You trusted my mother.”
“So did you.”
That was true.
Detective Cole asked Amy to remember details.
“What did the papers look like?”
“White.”
“How many?”
“Maybe three.”
“Were they clipped together?”
“I think so.”
“Did Teresa keep them?”
“Yes.”
“Did she explain anything?”
“She said they were family protection forms.”
Detective Cole and I exchanged a look.
Family protection.
The same phrase appeared in the fake trust.
Amy closed her eyes.
“She said every new mother signed them.”
My hands tightened under the table.
Detective Cole spoke gently.
“This is important, Amy.”
“I know.”
“Do you remember whether anything was blank?”
Amy thought for nearly a minute.
Then she nodded slowly.
“One page.”
“What about it?”
“It had my signature line near the bottom.”
“What was above it?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Was there text?”
She looked suddenly frightened.
“Not much.”
Detective Cole sat back.
A signed blank or partially blank page could be dangerous in the wrong hands.
Especially the hands of people already forging documents.
The search of Teresa’s apartment happened two days later under a warrant connected to the suspected financial fraud.
I was not allowed inside.
But Detective Cole called that evening.
“We found the papers.”
I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
“What are they?”
“One appears to be a consent form.”
“For what?”
“Temporary guardianship.”
My blood froze.
“Of Frederick?”
“Yes.”
Amy covered her mouth.
“Who is listed as guardian?”
There was a pause.
“Teresa.”
I could barely speak.
“She wanted custody of my son?”
“It’s more complicated than that.”
“How?”
“The document was never formally filed.”
“So why have it?”
“Leverage.”
Amy understood.
“If she could make us look unstable…”
Detective Cole nodded.
“She could potentially present documents suggesting you had previously trusted her with guardianship.”
I felt physically sick.
Another paper contained Amy’s signature beneath a statement saying Teresa contributed significant financial support to the household.
The upper portion appeared to have been printed after the signature.
The ink and printer patterns were different.
“They used my signature,” Amy whispered.
“Yes.”
“For something I never agreed to.”
“Yes.”
Her expression went hard.
Then Detective Cole revealed the worst discovery.
A recording device.
Found inside Teresa’s apartment.
It contained several audio files.
Some were ordinary conversations.
Others were not.
One recording captured my mother speaking to Betsy.
The date was six weeks before Frederick’s birthday.
Teresa’s voice was clear.
“Connor won’t fight me if Amy is gone.”
Betsy laughed.
“Gone where?”
“I don’t care.”
“Divorce is cleaner.”
“She won’t leave voluntarily.”
“Then make her miserable.”
There was a pause.
Teresa answered.
“I’ve been trying.”
Amy closed her eyes.
I stared at the table.
The forced work.
The insults.
The constant criticism.
The money.
It had not been random cruelty.
My mother had been deliberately trying to drive my wife away.
The recording continued.
Betsy said.
“If Amy leaves with the baby, Connor will chase her.”
Teresa replied.
“Not if he believes she took advantage of him.”
Then Betsy asked.
“And if she doesn’t leave?”
My mother’s answer came calmly.
“Then we change the plan.”
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Finally, I asked.
“What plan?”
Detective Cole’s face was serious.
“We’re still looking.”
But two hours later, she called again.
They had found another recording.
This one was labeled only with a date.
Frederick’s birthday.
Recorded before I arrived home.
My mother’s voice said:
May you like
“By tonight, Connor will have no choice but to listen.”
